Ezumezu Kwenu!
THE NEW BRIDE!
As Ogadinma finished cooking, she went out to the front
of her mud and rock hut type of house and shouted, Akachi! Aaakachiii! She
shouted twice and after a while the seven years old boy ran up to her from the
opposite compound and greeted his mother,Nne ndewo! And the mother
replied,Akachi where is your sister Ozichi? She asked and Akachi
replied,Nne,she is with Nmeri at their house! Stated the boy and the lady
Ogadinma said again to the boy,Akachi go and call her for me,the two of you
should return here at once for your evening meal! Do you hear me? She asked and
the boy nodded and ran off and later returned with his ten years old sister and
also trailing behind them was his sisters friend,Nmeri, the daughter Nze
Ugonna, one of the towns ruling council members,a very rich farmer, very rich in
tupence,it was rumoured that he had up to fifty bags of tupence stored away,as
the children returned, they all trooped inside to the back of Ogadinma’s house
and sat down to a large bowl of nri-ukoru (corn meal) and omimi okpu-kpu (bone
marrow extracts, good with corn meals) as they ate,one of Ogadinma’s best
friends named Uloma walked into the compound and made her way straight to the
back of the compound and on seeing the feeding family she greeted, Ndewo nu o!
and Ogadinma and her young son replied in unison,Oo ee, and Ogadinma and her
friend couldn’t help laughing at the young boy’s impudence,he had taken the
greetings of an elder,Uloma said,Taa Akachi, shut up and eat your food,so you
have started responding to greetings like the man of the house, she said while
Ogadinma smiled and said,Eey Nne you look beautifull, where are you coming
from,I was at your place earlier today when I was on my way to buy things to
cook with, she said and uloma replied,ha Nne,you will not believe it,but
today….,she suddenly stopped and eyed the eating children and said,ah I will
tell you later, and Ogadinma nodded and hurried the children to finnish their
meal, soon they finished and Ogadinma gave them the roasted fish she had bought
for them at the market, half a slice each and they all thanked her and soon took
off,probably for Nmeri’s house, ehen,as I was saying,said Uloma……..
The Town of Ezumezu had come to own four very
important properties several years ago,it so happened that the land of
Mbaeluelu had attacked Umuezumezu at a very unusual time for a very
unusual reason, they had claimed that Ichie Nnayereugo, one of the richest men in
Umuezumezu, a fire-stick moulder had been accused of seducing the wife of an
Mbaeluelu Nze,a high council elder, with his wealth on one of his trading
journeys to mbaeluelu and the above mentioned people did not take kindky to the
insult and several days later, they attacked Umuezumezu in an attempt to slay
Ichie Nnayereugo but the Vigilant Ezumezu warriors had come to the rescue on
time and put up a strong battle in defense of their townsman and in the ensuing
battle,Ochiagha Udenedeude had been killed and this sparked off a fierce
response from the Ezumezu warriors and they almost wiped out the attacking
team, their leader,Ochiagha Nwadinaobi of Mbaeluelu had fled from Umuezumezu
that night and onye-isi nche Okike had put up a chase which lasted for sixty days,he
chased the opponent so far as the end of the Ochanja lands which was after the
Elugwu mountains after Mgbidi which was forty days away on foot,he never gave
up or relented and after sixty days, the weary fleeing Mbaeluelu warrior who did
not want to run to his town directly,to avoid drawing the war to his towns
people gave upp the race and surrendered to the Onye-isi nche who took him
captive and marched through jungles with his prisoner whilst they fed on wild
foods and animals, the prisoner was hand tied and monitored and at their return
to Umuezumezu, the town was in an uproar,it had never been accomplished before,a
sixty days chase, soon the Eze of Umuezumezu ,Eze Nwakaibeya was begged by the
kinsmen of the said prisoner for a peacefull handover of the warrior,as an
Ochiagha,he was a high council member and can and will be returned to his
people by all means possible, which was the rule of all the igbo lands nearby,a
landowner can not be buried outside his land and the man was a senior
warrior, the negotiations took some days in which the other town agreed to give
four virgin females to the Umuezumezu people in return for the murder of their
late Ochiagha Udenedeude, the corpses of the other slayed Mbaeluelu warriors
were also returned to their people after so long although it’s preserved state
was deteriorating, normally,a land owner is considered a senior member of his
or her community and in situations like this, every ruler endeavors to ensure
that a land owner regains his or her freedom,at all costs, but in this case, the
said Ochiagha of Mbaeluelu also had to give up his seventeen years old
daughter, she was one of the four virgins, her name was Adaku, after the
exchange,Onyenche Okike was immediately promoted to the rank of the Ochiagha of
the Umuezumezu people and also the representing high council member of the
Umuezumezu warriors to the ndi Nze Onye Eze council, which the high council of
the land,a high council member must be accorded maximum respect in all of igbo
land,no one must banter, argue or exchange incoherent words with a high council
member,to verbally insult or abuse a high council member is equall to verbally
abusing or insulting Eze Nwakaibeya,They alone can speak to the Onye eze, they
alone can intercede for anyone before the Onye Eze thus it was the highest
council in every land and the thirty five years old Ochiagha was more than
overwhelmed but it was clear to all that he had merited the post,Ochiagha okike
was the son of Mazi ikeduru, from the village of Nkwontain Umuezumezu land, there
were seven villages in the land of Ezumezu and nkwonta was notorious for
breeding mostly dancers and yam farmers, the ochiagha had a junior brother who
also was a farmer and a merchant,a very prosperous one at that, but in the case
of the new Ochiagha,,he inherited a plot of land from the two plots left by his
late father and after his fathers death,he joined the Ndi-nche, and as was due
to all new Nche members,he was paid fifteen tupence evry twenty five days, ten
pence makes up a tupence and in those parts of the lands,a pence can buy some
tubers of cassava for a heavy meal for three people, the greatest priviledge of
being an nche member is the ability to understand some funny looking
scribblings on slates and plain white cloths which the Onye eze’s servants call
Akwa-nde,in those lands only the ndi-nche or Ndi ozi obodo or the ndi nze can
read and write or the Eze and his family, thus if any stranger walks into their
lands and is able to understand the writings or able to read and write then he
or she is either a member of an Eze family or a servant to an Eze family or a
warrior or spy, common people did not even know what it was and before you get
accepted, you may be screened for as long as two years, many grow old while
waiting to be called to service, but if one is observed to be very hardworking
and persevering in his pursuits,he will be considered,Ochiagha okike grew
rapidly amongst the ranks and in nine years he became the deputy to the onye
isi nche,he was always amongst those who escorted the onye ozi obob on his
inter town errands, and two years before the death of Ochiagha udenedeude,he
was promoted to the rank of onye-is nche, that’s the towns head warrior or chief
security officer and as soon as he was promoted to the rank of Ochiagha, none
could stand his might and fame in the nearby lands as the Warlord of Ezumezu
and in all this years,he had grown in wealth and strength,he now owned over
eleven plots of land and he had over nine thousand tubers of yams in his barns
and he also had saved in his holes behind the yam barns in his well secured
compound, over one hundred thousand tupence,he was very wealthy and his missions
also got him a lot of favour from the onye eze, thin the last five years,Okike
had continuosly fed on yams day and night and could also afford to feed his six
servants with yams, the king of all crops everyday, only the very rich could do
this, yams were the most expensive of all nutritions in the whole of those lands
and anyone who could feed on yams even if it is once a day was a rich man but
ochiagha okike was past that stage,he could feed the entire nkwonta in one day
with yams, his recent feat escalated the prestige of Umuezumezu land and
Nwakaibeya was proud of him,so was all the Ezumezu people, infact,he was the
most eligible bachelor in all the lands within twenty days march around, all
spoke of the great chase for over many years.
The Four young girls named Adaku,Uloma,Ogadinma and
Olanma were given to the Ezumezu people in compensation for their dead warlord
Udenedeude who was killed due to an unprovoked attack by the Mbaeluelu people,
thus the girls came to belong to a land that they could never leave again, but
the laws of Umuezumezu was strictly against slavery and Eze Nwakaibeya simply
told the ndi nze to give the girls a place to build a habitable place for
themselves and he made it clear that he really had no use for them but it would
please him if they will serve him by pleasing the young men of the village in
such ways as a woman may please a man but of course any man who wants such a pleasure
should pay for it and thus the girls may earn their living, that was how they
came to reside in Umuezumezu due to no fault of theirs but due to the folly of
their men and fathers.
Ogwu, you lie too much, how can you say that?it is true
that you are an Oroba person but that does not mean that you come from the
moon, everyone knows that Echiche is the power of life and death,a person who
has no thoughts is a dead person or have ever seen a thinking corpse? He asked
and Ogun replied,No Ojima,it is not like that, you see Okun is the creator of
all things and afterwards he gave power to us his children to live in abundance
and sends his son which is Osa to watch over us and pur rain on the land so
that we may have enough food,he told Osa to go up into the skies and build his
own place of abode and Osa did as instructed and Osa it is that created all
flying things, they it is that watches over the seeds of the world,Osa is our
Eldest brother, whenever anyone dies,Osa will purify the person’s life and turn
him or her into a cloud or wind to live free in ecstasy,Osa was also instructed
by our father Okun to put light in the skies by day and night thus he puts on
the sun everyday and lowers its flames by night but if Osa favours you,he
will allow you to pass through the sun which is a magic fire in the skies above
and the skies above is Osa itself which the waters that protects the world,he
can allow you to pass through the gate of fire and if you do ,you will have the
power to build you own place in the skies above Osa too, infact that is why we
worship osa,he has promised that his favoureds will have their own place in the
skies above him like his too! Stated ogun to Ojimba the Ntu-oku maker,Ojimba
and ogun had been friends for over ten years,Ogun came from a far away land
across the ochanja river, infact it will take up to twenty days or more to get
to ogun’s town,he was a fire stick maker and he always came to ala-elugwu to
purchase ntu-oku for the production of his fire sticks and each time he
came, each man would try to convince the other that his creator was more
supreme,Ojimba was from ala-Elugwu,he was a merchant with five apprentices who
came from far away lands to learn his craft,he was married with four
children, three sons and a daughter, two of his son’s were already warriors in
the Nche obodo of ala-elugwu and his daughter was sicteen years old and suitors
were already making moves, his last son was always setting traps with his play
mates in the bushes or tending to the cassava farms with his mother, infact,Ojimba
was so rich he had a horse,in those lands, very few people could afford the
great animal which was always brought by the Ndoki people who tied towels on
their head, they sold this great and expensive animals at either the great
Ochanja market or the ala Elugwu market or at the Mbaitolu great riverside
market, the people of those lands believed in the powers of a being called
Echiche (tought) it was believed that with toughts all that be came to be and
anything that is not was not tought of,and they see all other things as foolish
because everyone thinks which means that Echiche is life!, my friend, don’t be
deceived,Echiche is alive! Stated ojimba, yes I say so because in the beginning
of the beginning,Echiche tought of a beautifull place and it came to be and it
decided to think of what to put on it to inhabit the place and he tought of all
living things and they all were and he put itself in them and they had life and
began to think and today as you can see, because we can think,we can do all that
we do and if you can think, then you are a product of echiche the tought of
life! Stated Ojimba and Ogun shook his head and said ah ojimba you never cease
to amuse me,don’t you drink water? Then how can you refuse to accept the fact
that Okun the great waters of all times is the source of life? Without water,
all things would perish, even the lands and the plants, stated Ogun and Ojimba
replied, yes, that may be true but anything that has no toughts id dead too and
if the trees do live and grow, then it is because they think or don’t you think?
He asked funnily, the men bantered on for hours,Ogun had arrived the day before
and on each of his purchase trips to ala-elugwu he stays for five days in which
time his required ntu-oku moulds is produced for him, already Ojimba had many orders
to supply but Ogun was a principal client and Ojimba had put many others on
hold just to produce for his friend.
So tell me what did he say that he will buy for you?
Olanma asked and Adaku replied,ah,he promised to return with the new akwansa
wrapper for me and the latest Ebeli slippers as well! Said the girl and Olanma
clapped and said, hey my sister you are lucky oo,me too,my ochiagha promised to
buy the akwansa for me too, infact, yesterday he gave me ten tupence to cook his
favourite dish of pounded yams and ofe uha and okporoko and mpianmpia for
him,he will be visiting today, you know that every fourth day of the week is his
day of….. you know what I mean? She said and laughed in a fashion that made her
beauty radiate more brilliantly, she was a very beautifull girl and she already
had a four years old son and a six years old daughter named ndudim and
adaoma, she was in love with ochiagha okike but so was almost every girl in the
entire Umuezumezu but she was favoured by the Ochiagha for his womanly needs
and in return he made her comfortable and well catered for irrespective of her
trade which of course is her service to the Onye-eze but to make it clear that
he was the boss, every forth day of the week, she does not attend to anyone
else but the Ochiagha who comes with his gifts and stays for a long time before
leaving, ehhn,is that so? My nwude sent me an nmkpi (he goat) this morning,he
said that I should sell it and use the money to buy new roofing cannes for my
house,he will send his servants to come and place them for by tomorrow, said
Adaku and Olanma replied, you are very lucky oo,Opara Eze Nwude ( prince Nwude)
has never even noticed me,sometimes I will pass by him and his guard warriors
on the road and greet him and he will aknowledge me with a nod but he has never
really looked at my face,is he friendly at all, she asked curiously and Adaku
laughed and said, that one? He is a comedian,he loves to tell jokes and he is
very shy but also very strict,he made it clear that if he catches any of my
clients on his day of visit,he will have the person beheaded and it will be my
fault, infact,he told me not to even attend to all this small-small boys, that it
made him look like their equall but he is very friendly with Uloma,he gave her
a five tupence gift three days ago at Okwa drnking place where we met him and
his friend Onye-isi nche Nwokoike! Stated the young girl and just then Ogadinma
walked in looking very unhappy and Adaku asked? nne obu nghirin? And Ogadinma
replied,my sister it is a long story but if I must tell you, then you will plait
my hair because I need to go and weave it at Ukadia’s place at the market, she
stated and Adaku quickly pulled up a small stool and said, ngwa, seat and let me
plait your hair! But you must tell me what is wrong with you at once! Ok? She
ordered and Ogadinma sat down and brought out her hair make-up bag and took out
a four tongued native comb and gave it to Adaku to plait the hair with, Ahh ,I
have suffered greatly!,wailed Ogadinma, can you imagine? She bgan in a hushed tone
as her friends drew nearer, Yes, Onye-Nze Nkoro is going about inciting the
other Nze’s to speak to Eze Nwakaibeya to send us back to our land! Can you
imagine the old and jobless gossip? She said and Olanma quickly put her palm on
her lips and signalled to Ogadinma to keep quiet,ha! Ogadi! , how can you
speak about an Nze like that? Do you want to be canned? Better not get us into
trouble, but is what you say true? She asked and Ogadi swore to the fact and
adaku burst out vehemently, what manner of nonsense is that? Go back to where ?
to do what? Nne listen ,me I like it here, what am I going to do at mbaeluelu
again? Here,I have some money saved,I am even richer than okatafor the trapper!
She stated and began to laugh, yes! My Nwude has assured me that if I am able to
save up to the required amount needed to pay for a land,he will speak to his
father on my behalf, look, I want to be a land owner in this land,so that my
sons can join the nche and be like Onye-isi Nche Nwokoike or Ochiagha Okike or
even better an onye Ozi Obodo ( chief Diplomat and court envoy), I have saved
up to six hundred tupence for over five years and I will not stop until I make
my son eligible for the Nche service,do you hear me? I am not leaving! She
retorted fumingly and Olanma calmed her down and said listen my sisters,I have
two sons ( named Iheanyi and Ubochioma four, and six years each) and my
Ochiagha has promised me that if I can save up to one thousand tupence before
they get to sixteen years each, the he will give me the remaining two hundred
tupence to pay for a portion of land, then he will personally register my sons
as Nche members and directly under his supervision and training, who knows, one
they one of them may become an Ochiagha in this land, why is that Onye-Nze okoro
so wicked? No wonder, when ever I greet him on the road he will simply nod and
put his nose in the air like a peacock! Said the young mother of two, just then
two young boys walked into the compound carrying baskets of yams on their head
and greeted the ladies, Ndewo nu oo! Chorused the boys and the ladies replied
in unison,Ndewo oo nu! And one of the boys named Madukaku spoke to Olanma and
said,Adanne! Ochiagha Okike has asked us to deliver this fifteen tubers of yams
to you and he also gave me ten tupence to give you,he said that you should buy
Okporoko or goat laps for him and cooks his meal,he will be here after his
inspections today! Stated the young fifteen years old servant whose servitude
to the Ochiagha will be rewarded with his acceptance into the Nche service in
the next one year when he will become sixteen years ( he handed the coins over
to Olanma),and olanma smiled and said,ah,thank you my boys, you are good
boys, here take this one tupence and buy an atumakwu of palmwine for yourselves
or some bushmeat, she said and gave the coin to madukaku who thanked her
happily,he needed the five pence share he will get from the etani (money),he
was paid twelve tupence every twenty five days for his duties as a servant to
the Ochiagha and he has to save to buy his own Nche Uniforms, Nche
matchet, spear and bow and metal tipped arrows, the reigning types made by Okanga
Nkwo of ezegukwu village when he actually joins the nche, they left and Ogadinma
spoke, hey Ola nwanyi oma, this your ochiagha will spoil you silly with gifts, fifteen
tubers of yams? Ha,you will give me one before I leave oo! Stated Ogadinma and
Olanma nodded and said, not to worry, you will both go home with a tuber of yam
each!,the ladies chatted on.
Abuchi! Have you heard? Ekwe asked asked his friend as
they trekked from Umule land and on their way to Umuezumezu to buy fire sticks
for sale at their own land. Heard what? My friend,he he asked and ekwe
continued, hmm,Nwanna ehh,it is rumoured that the famous Ochiagha Okike of
Umuezumezu is going to take a bride soon! I heard from Ukadike of Umuoleke at
the Uhurun markets yesterday,he said and Abuchi replied,Ha,dike ukwu! Okike is
a great warrior and deserves a befitting bride,I wonder who the lucky girl
is,that man has not eaten cassava in over eight years,he is indeed wealthy! I
hear that his barns contains over ten thousand tubers of yams, that is indeed
great wealth and he has a lot of goats,if you ask me,I will say that it may be
Adaeze, the daughter of Eze Nwakaibeya! Said Abuchi and Ekwe shook his head and
replied ,ah my friend, that is the news, the girl in question is not even from
Umuezumezu! Said the fire stick merchant and Abuchi frowned and said, not from
Ezumezu? Then who is she and where was she from? He asked eargerly and Ekwe
said, I was told by Ukadike that the girl is from Umuoleke land, she is the
daughter of mazi Nmaju, the butcher and meat seller! He said and Abuchi shook
his head,That wicked and stingy man for an inlaw? Nmaju has Etani but eats it
alone and is always complaining of the high price of cows whenever he comes to
buy cows at Umule,he has never lost a pence to anyone before, what is Okike
going to look for in Nmaju’s house? Abuchi asked and ekwe continued, that is not
all my brother,It is said that the Ochiagha has already sent two hundred tubers
of yams to the Nmaju family this week and a gift of one hundred tupence! Stated
Ekwe and Abuchi shook his head and said,ah,people who have head have no cap to
wear and people who have caps have no head to wear the caps,if okike wanted a
wife,he should have come to me,my daughter Onyinyechi is a good girl and very
young too, seventeen years and well trained for a great man like okike, and I am
a good person,ha,I wish I would get an inlaw that can give away one hundred
tupence as a gift before the actuall marriage, afterall,Mazi Nzube’s daughter
who is married to Onye nche Enyinnaya of Uhunru is still yet to submit their
ezzine beads to the girls parents and Mazi Nzube is still waiting for his
Ezinna beads too,and now good and great warriors like Okike falls into the
hands of a stingy man like Nmaju, wonders will never end, which of the daughters
is it? He asked and Ekwe replied, hnn,it is that one that comes to help him at
his stall at Umule whenever he comes to sell meat, she is called
,emm, yes,Enyidiya! Yes that is her name,Enyidiya! She is pretty but very fierce
and ferocious when it involves her father’s business, she is like her father as
you said, very stingy,I wonder what the Ochiagha would have seen in a girl like
that? He said and abuchi shrugged and laughed,ah ,in my days,I had to save for
two years to pay for the Ezinne bead and the eziina beads before I could go to
my Chidinma,my wife’s parents and they respected me for that,Okike can even
give nmaju and Ezinna title Cap and fan which will make nmaju an Ichie,a
community elder that can stand up to the Ndi-nze’s,Nmaju is indeed lucky,if
Okike can give him a hundred tupence gift,he can also make him an Ichie,so that
means I will be calling Nmaju an Ichie soon,I am sure of that if Okike is
really going to marry his daughter then,Nmaju will become an elder in his land
forever, chei,I envy him oo! Said the man,Ekwe as they continued on the two days
journey Umuezumezu,
Nwokoike laughed and said, hey Okike,so you actually
want to abandon me in bachelorhood and got hooked to a woman? So who will go to
if I need to water my throat with palm wine? He asked jovially and Ochiagha
Okike laughed and said, look at you,so you think that I will continue to buy
palm wine for you every day ehhnn? I will soon be a husband so if you want to
grease your throat with palm wine, you can go to Nwamadi the palm wine seller or
Akatafor at Umule,he is a trapper and palm wine seller, the oldest and the most
original drinks can only from such men,me I will have to retire from the
service of active palm wine drinking and sourcing,he said in a funnier
tone, just then,Opara Eze Nwude walked into the Ochiagha’s compound and Ochiagha
Okike and onye-isi nche nwokoike got and courtesied and said,Ekele diri gi
Nwude, they both said in unison and prince Nwude replied as he sat down,Ha
Okike dike! You have refused to come and see me at the Ovu Eze so I have come
to you today,he said and signalled to his five men guard warrior men to stay
outside and they did,as the ochiagha and Nwokoike sat down and the ochiagaha
called his servants,Amobi! Maduka,Bring more roasted meat and palm wine,my
prince is here,he shouted and they all laughed and Ochiagha Okike said to
prince Nwude, ha Nwude, is it not up to one month now that I saw you last? I
hear that you now live at Adaku’s place! He said in comical way and Nwude could
not control the laughter and replied, look at who is talking, you that I heard
gave twenty tupence and fifty tubers of yams to Olanma just for a days
pleasure, believe me,I am a student in comparison to you,I even heard that you
bought her a goat yesterday,is it not true and yet they tell me that you are
about to get married soon,I pity that girl that you want to marry,if only she
knows where she is coming to! Said Nwude and Nwokoike interjected,ah,this kind
of talk is for you two lecherous nmkpi’s,as for me,I am a gentle person and
cannot afford to waste etani on such trivialities, said Nwokoike and prince
Nwude twisted his face in a comical way and said, hey, see this one oo! You are
particularly the worst,I have heard about you and my sister Adaeze for a long
time, hmnn, just pray that my father does not catch you at your pranks, said the
prince and nwokoike and Okike laughed and the prince turned just as the
servants deposited the bowls containing roasted goat meat and freshly grinded
pepper and palm oil with salt and a jar of palm wine, theprince poured himself a
cup of palm wine and took a big goat meat and began to eat and drink, after a
while,he said,Okike,my father sent me to you,he said that you should be at the
Ovu by evening,he has an errand for you ! he said and the Ochiagha nodded as he
swallowed his meat.
Ekelem Eze Nwakaibeya! Okike Saluted as he stood
before the onye eze and the high council and some very rich members of the
community and Eze Nwakaibeya nodded and said,Okike,I want to send you to
ala-Elugwu,you will go and purchase ihyinyhan (horses),as you can see,the great
animals have become fashionable for the nche and ozi obodo service,it will be
good for us to get some too,I have sent messengers to the towns people to
inform them of our plans to elevate our land by acquiring this great animals
and anyone who wishes can bring his or her etani so that you can also purchase
theirs as well,I have made enquiries and I was informed that each ihnyiyhan
costs two hundred and twenty tupence,so I want to buy ten for the nche services
and the ozi obodo,is that ok with you? He asked and the Ochiagha delightedly
nodded, yes onye eze,it is a good Idea and the eze continued,Listen,Ichie
Nnayereugo has brought his etani,so hear him out! He said and the Ichie turned
to Ochiagha Okike and said,Ochiagha,it shall be well with you! Yes I have
brought two hundred and fifty tupence here with me,I want a strong
ihnyinyhan and the remaining etani is for those of you that will go on
the journey,it is for your palm wine,he said and the Ochiagha collected the
etani and gave it to Nze Ugonna,The high council treasurer and the nze
wrote it down on the akwa-nde and another Ichie,Omenihu by name,a plantain and
banana merchant also deposited the same amount for a horse, infact five ichie’s
deposited two hundred and fifty tupence each for a horse and the high council
members also did the same and Ochiagha Okike also pledged to pay two hundred
and fifty tupence for his own horse, making it a total of twenty six horses
which going to cost six thousand five hundred etani, the Ochiagha was told to go
and prepare with his guards for the journey and he left, an hour later,he was
at the ndi nche lair and as he entered the warriors all boomed in their
salutions manner,Anyi ekele Ochiagha and he responded and said,Listen all of
you,if you hear your name, step up here at once, Onye nche nzeribe§ he called
and the Onye nche stepped at once, onye nche umunnakwe! He shouted and that one
came out too,he thus called their names untilthere were twenty seven warriors
standing in front of me and he said, the rest of you are to continue your
duties,I will be away for a while,Onye isi Nche nwokoike is still here with
you! He said and turned and went out of the lair ,closely followed by the
twenty seven warriors.
As He and his men stood before the onye Eze and the
high council,Ochiagha Okike gave the list of their requirements to Onye Nze
Nnabuihe and he began to recite it to Eze Nwakaibeya who listened and later
called his main store keeper and ordered the storekeeper to make available to
the travelling warriors, thirty seven tubers of yams,a bag of salt and a bag of
pepper and a jar of palm oil, he also handed over the horse etani to the
Ochiagha and also gave them an extra five thousand tupence for their feeding on
the long twenty five days journey to ala elugwu, Eze Nwakaibeya also gave the
Onye Ozi Obodo a three days errand to run ahead of the warriors and announce
the passage of the Ezumezu warriors to all the towns and lands along the way
unto Umule, before an hour, the Onye Ozi Obodo and his two men guard warrior
team was off to clear the way for their warriors, thus after umule, the warriors
will be able to take care of themselves,by noon time, the Ezumezu warriors left
their town, each man was carrying a tuber of yam each,a small portion of salt
and pepper and tied pouch of palm oil,a matchet,a spear of bow and arrows and
in full warrior uniforms, they marched westwards towards Uhunrhun and by
midnight they arrived at the outskirts of Uhunrhun, the Uhunrhun warriors who
had been forewarned of the passage of the Ezumezu warriors were on guard at
roads close to their lands and watched silently as the afamed Ochiagha marched
non-stop and wordlessly past Uhunrun and towards Ihiala and by dawn they were
at the outskirts of Ihiala where they camped for the morning, and roasted half
of their yams and ate them with palm oil and salt, two of the warriors were sent
into Ihiala town to purchase two jars of water and they returned in some few
minutes with two more ihiala warriors who gave them back their money and also
gave them the water for free, compliments of the friendly gestures of their own
Ochiagha Ebube of Ihiala, and by noon, the warriors were soon well rested and began
their march again towards Umule,a tribe of very great hunters and
warriors, feared by their enemies,it was not a place you came upon suddenly, they
did not stop at Umule as the Onye ozi obodo would have done his work and would
return to Umuezumezu as sson as he might have finished eating the welcome goat
the eze of umule may have had cooked for him and his guards,The Ochiagha and
his men marched through towards towards Umuekeleoma.
Enyidiya!,Enyidiya! Shouted Chibuzor stubbornly,you
have some visitors! Said the insolent eighteen years old boy who found it hard
to believe that any man could have actually found anything to like in his
troublesome and quarrelsome sister, not to talk of even marrying her,he was
actually beginning to think of the stubborn Ochiagaha as a foolish man! ,
Enyidiya came out of her hut andd saw Madukaku and Amobi, the two were bearing
baskets of yams and a he goat was standing besides Amobi,Da enyidiya,we were
sent by Ochiagha Okike to give you this forty tubers of yams and and a he goat
and also this etani ( he handed over a small pouch containing fifty
tupence),the girl was thrilled, ehhnnn, all this for me? She asked joyously and
ran inside to get her mother who also came out and asked of the Ochiagha and
was told that he had gone on a mission for Eze Nwakaibeya and would return in
thirty days,Enyidiya’s mother was overjoyed, this was the seventh time within
the last six months, the Ochiagha had already proven that he could control a
household fearlessly, the messengers were asked to sit and later presented with
a huge bowl of pounded yams and ofe-ngbam and fresh fish and they were also
given some palm wine,,they spent the night at Umuoleke and resumed their
journey back home to Umuezumezu the next day and hopefully may arrive before evening
time.
On the twelfth day,the Ezumezu warriors arrived at ala
elugwu and were heralded with a loud cheer, the Elugwu warriors were all glad to
see firsthand, the great Ochiagha Okike of Umuezumezu whose fame had gone even
beyond the borders of the great one hundred and seven great lands of the
igbo’s,the roads of the towns was jampacked with people cheering the great
warlord whose name is used by mother’s and father’s to tell their children
evening time tales of great feats and warriors of great lands,Okike was a
legend while still alive!
Ojimba, what is happening out there? Ogun asked his
friend,he had arrived the night before to purchase his usual one thousand
tupence worth of ntu-oku and Mazi Ojimba asked one of his apprentices to go and
take a look and bring back reports but before the apprentice could return, mazi
ojimba’s small son ran in and shouted,Nnam ,bia lekwa Ochiagha Okike (
father, come and see Ochiagha Okike), the mazi turned to Ogun who could speak
igbo fluently, though he was from a distant land known as ala-Oroba,but from his
accents, you would know that he was a stranger, infact many strangers often came
to Ala-Elugwu to trade because of their closeness to ala-Ochanja and the great
Ochanja river, Ogun who had often heard of the great and fearless warrior got
up to go and see for himself and was not disappointed,he saw a well built young
man of about thirty five years, broad shoulders, chin raised a bit
proudly, infact, you would know that he was all they say he was and he was
obviously a very arrogant man,Ogun smiled as he looked at the young warrior,he
saw all he had wanted to be in his youth,as they marched into the great town
followed by the large crowd of admirers, the ala_elugwu warriors led by Ochiagha
Agude of ala-Elugwu rode up to the visitors on their horses and spoke,Ochiagha
Okike ndi Umuezumezu,Unu obiakwara na udo? He asked ( ochiagha okike of
Umuezumezu, have you come in peace?) and Ochiagha Okike responded,Ochiagha
agude,Ekelem gi,Eze Nwakaibeya nke ndi Umu Ezumezu si Ekele diri ndi ala elugwu
nile oo! ( Ochiagha Agude of ala-Elugwu I salute you,Eze Nwakaibeya of
Umuezumezu sends his greetings to the entire people of ala elugwu),the crowd
cheered again as the Ochiagha finished speaking and ochiagha Agude turned his
horse and rode off fast with his men, probably towards the Ovu Eze to relay his
findings, while two foot warriors from ala-elugwu lead them to the ovu eze on
foot.
Onye Eze,like I said earlier, the commotion is due to
the arrival of the Umuezumezu warriors and their Ochiagha who sends the
greetings of their Eze,they have come in peace and they will soon arrive
here, said ochiagha Agude of ala-Elugwu to Eze Ugwunechemba of ala-Elugwu, and
the eze nodded as the commotion drew nearer and after ten minutes, two ala
elugwu warriors walked into the ove followed by the proud looking ochiagha
Okike and his men and as they entered they all courtesied and hailed the eze,
Ugwunechemba we salute, eze Nwakibeya also salutes you,may you reign for long
and may your lands prosper in your time! Said the Ochiagha and the eze
replied,Okike, you are welcome to ala-elugwu,so what brings you here? And how is
my good friend Nwakaibeya? He asked and Ochiagha okike replied,Onye eze,Eze
nwakaibeya is fine and he has sent me to come and buy some items for him from
his good friend, eze Ugwunechemba! Said the Ochiagha and the eze replied and
said;ah Okike, what might this item be if I may ask? And the ochiagha
replied,Onye eze,we have come to purchase some well trained horses for our onye
eze and he says that you will surely give some to him at a very good price!
Stated ochiagha Okike and eze Ugwunechemba smiled and turned to Ochiagha Agude
and said,Agude,do take your fellow warlord and go to the Ndoki people, tell them
that they are my friends and thus should be given good and quality studs and
also afterwards, treat them to a good feast, tell my store keeper to make
available anything you want for their entertainment whilst still in our
lands, said the eze and he turned to ochiagha Okike and said, okike,I don’t sell
horses, the ndoki people do but they will treat you well since they are my
friends too,so be rest assured that you will be given quality animals here and
do take your time and ensure that the quality of the training of the horses is
sufficiently tought to you before you leave, have a good day! Said the eze and
the visitors bowed and followed Ochiagha Agude and his men.
Nne ada,why don’t you sell it for me at the usual
price,it is too expensive at three pence for nine tubers of cassava or has
their been an erosion, she tried to joke but the stony faced nne-ada refused to
budge,Uloma did not understand why this woman was always so hard heartened
towards her, though most women try to put their noses in the air when they see
Uloma or any of her sisters, they pretend that they do this because they would
have preferred their dead Ochiagha to prostitutes but the truth still remains
that even the four sisters had no hand in the death of their lformer ochiagha
and currently their son’s are not complaining about the presence of the
girls, women like nne ada are simply jealous because the girls seem to be
prospering seriously which proves that their men really do welcome the
idea;Uloma turned and walked away down to another shed in the noisy market and
Nne ada hissed, useless girls, look at them sway their worthless hips like it is
worth a pence! She stated and said to her neighbour,Akurulo, this girls are a
big problem here oo,can you imagine, girls who should be used as slaves since
their fathers killed our beloved Ochiagha are now allowed to leave and prosper
amongst us,see hee cloths,Akwa-nsa,the most expensive type,even I don’t have
that type, this girls are now where our husbands spend their money! She said and
Akurulo barked out, shut your filthy mouth nne-ada! You are a wicked person, were
you not here when this girls were forcefully brought here and given to us in
replacement for the late ochiagha, have’nt they suffered enough? Are you jealous
of them? Shame on you then,a respectably married mother of five children is
jealous of prostitutes,ok then,go and join the business and stop talking about
the girls to me! Said the angry Akurulo and Nne ada hissed and said, yes,I know
that you’ll support them, afterall birds of the same feathers flock alike,I know
you were once in the trade so defend them, one day you will cry had I known if
they take your hasband away from you, said nne ada furiously to Akurulo and
Akurulo hissed and faced her wares whilst the lady,Uloma was at another stall
and she managed to buy ten tubers of cassava for three pence there and later
moved on to another stall to buy some ingredients.
On the fifth day of their trade errand, the Ezumezu
warriors were satisfied with their purchases and were escorted out of ala
elugwu by Ochiagha Agude and his men, they led them as far as egbelubi which was
two days away before returning to ala elugwu and the Ezumezu warriors raced
onwards home with their new acquisitions, they journeyed tirelessly and would
rest for some hours by day or by night and continue the journey with the horses
and on the sisth day of their departure from ala-Elugwu,they arrived
Umuezumezu, and rode straight to the ove eze to deliver the purchase, the ndi
nze’s rejoiced, the rich men in the town who had given etani for a horse to be
purchased for them came out to collect their horse,at the end of the
day,Ochiagha okike went home with his own black steed,a gallant stallion
indeed,Onye Eze Nwakaibeya gave a horse to the Onye ozi obodo,he kept three for
the use of his household and his household servants and gave the remaining six
to Onye isi nche Nwokoike for the use of the Nche people.
Okike, here is a sack of etani for you, said Nwokoike to
Ochiagha Okike two days after his return from Ala elugwu, is it my yams money?
He asked and Nwokoike nodded and said, yes,in your absence, I did as you
instructed and monitored your servants while they harvested and I shared the
harvest into two,one part I took to the Umule markets and also monitored them
as they sold to minor traders who will go to sell in other towns,we took twelve
thousand tubers to the markets and sold at one tupence and two pence for a
tuber of yam and after paying labourers that helped carry the yams to the
markets, what I gave to you is what is left of the etani, eleven thousand tupence
and five hundred tupence, and the rest of the yams are in your barns, twelve
thousand tubers of yams! Stated the onye isi nche and Ochiagha Okike took the
bag and placed it on the floor besides him and said, nwoko, thank you so much and
as you know,I also do the same for you and will always do so for
you, however, let us drink some palm wine and have some fresh fish roasted for
us,I had them go and buy fish today at Aladinma.
Have you heard? The Ochiagha and his friends may be
here in about ten days time to formalise the marriage, said Eberechi to Akunna
his friend, I wonder what he saw in that girl, said the boy just as Enyidiya
walked up to the duo and asked,Ebere, where is Chibuzor? She asked and Eberechi
Retorted,Hmmnn!,what kind of insult is that? Cant you greet? Or am I too small
that you could not greet me first? He asked in mock anger and Enyidiya
replied, bia, mechie onu gi! Small boy like you wants to be greeted by
me,Enyidiya! ha,you are trying to annoy me or have you forgotten that I am
getting married to an Ochiagha? She asked and Chibuzor cut,hey nne look
here,Ochiagha or no Ochiagha,we will flog you silly if you disrespect us
here, afterall, they have girls in their village,I wonder why he wants our own!
Said the boy and Enyidiya laughed and said,ah,so you are jealous, how odd,and you
think that I will abandon an Ochiagha for you? You must be joking! Oh by the
way,he will be coming soo so prepare to run away! She said and just then
Chibuzor walked up to them and Eberechi said to him,nna your sister is trying
to insult us by saying that we are inferior to her husband: and Chibuzor hissed
and said, don’t mind the stupid girl, she acts as if Okike is the only Ochiagha
that exists, afterall,we also have an Ochiagha in Umuoleke so why should we
care? I know her type, soon she will be sent home for bad behaviour, stated the
boy and Enyidiya hissed and retorted, jealous riffraffs, anyway,I came to tell
you that your meal of Djapu and uha soup is ready,so come and eat,oh by the
way,as you can see,my husband has warned me against eating cassava,it is not
decent people like,so I will be eating my pounded yam while you eat
cassava,RIFF RAFF! She stated to the annoyed Chibuzor and ran away and as
Chibuzor got up,he complained to his friends,Chei,me! Now a riff raff because
an Ochiagha keeps sending her plenty quantity of tubers of yams and etani,I
wander if he doesn’t know what to do with his food and etani! Stated the boy as
he walked away.
Okike may be getting married nne but he is not about
to die so why are you crying as if you will never see him alive again? Uloma
asked a teary eyed Olanma and Uloma spoke, listen ola,the Ochiagha was wnice to
you while it lasted but you know what we are to this people, they cannot marry
us,we will be a disgrace to any man as a wife, but they have been kind enough to
allow us earn money to buy lands to be landowners so that our children can be
called sons and daughters of umuezumezu,we should be gratefull for that,we are
in this situation because of the folly of our fathers and I hope that one day
my son will be a great warrior or Nze in this land so that if anything happens
to him by outsiders, they will also fight for him and acquire four women slaves
because of him, that is my utmost dream,so do not destroy the opportunity given
to us to redeem ourselves, when the new wife comes, you should be polite to
her, after all she is the wife of an Ochiagha, wife to an nze! Stated Uloma
factually, and Ogadinma spoke again and said, yes,my prince Nwude has assured me
that we will be given lands as soon as we can afford it and then my sons will
walk proudly and the onye eze had made it clear that no one can or should ever
mis-refer to our sons as bastards or non-indigenes,they will be given titles
and can even be Nze’s please do not cry, nothing is yet to happen that is new
under the sun,or do you want to go back to mbaeluelu? She asked her crying
sister and Olanma vehemently shook her head and said,go back to do what? I can
never be that type of woman again! She stated and she wiped her tears!.
Onye Nze Nnabuihe, please explain what you mean? Said
Nze ugonna to his fellow nze, they had been called to gether at Nze Okoro’s
house by Nze Okoro and there was a heated argument going on,yes, what I am
saying is that Nze okoro has no right to speak on this matter again,Eze
nwakaibeya has already made his stand very clear, that the ladies in question
are serving a purpose which he said that they should serve, why battle it? Asked
the Nze to everyone present and Nze Okoro retorted, but that is the point, why
cant we battle it? They are serving him in a manner most despicable to us,we
all regret the death of the late Ochiagha but we no longer have any need for
this women here again, they have already began to breed like rats and soon will
have sons who will challenge our sons tomorrow in the Nche service or as nze’s,I
forbid that! He stated and Nze Ugonna said,Okoro, you of all people know the
dangers in challenging Nwakaibeya,it may cost you your life,he wants them to
keep our youths and young warrior sons entertained and occupied whenever they
need the services of such that only a woman can provide, what is wrong in
that, since the arrival of this women,we no longer have rape cases or of sons
accusins the other of having an affair with their wives, they all have where to
go with their sexuall needs, please leave this matter alone! Said the elder nze
and Nze Okoro retorted vehemently, but that is what I mean, our sons no longer
have savings and all they do is give their money to those women, cant you
see, they look more expensively catered for than even our wives, infact, they are
better dressed than most of our wives, said the Nze and nze Obioha retorted,Tah
okoro, speak for yourself alone, they are neither better efd nor better fed than
my wife and I can see that you are jealous of this poor and helpless girls, have
you forgotten how they came to be with us? It is due to no fault of theirs, they
are paying for the sins of their fathers and speaking of which, you are also to
remember that one of them was the daughter of an Ochiagha,a very powerfull and
wealthy man,but this is what war can do to a man,he has resigned his post and
he is now an nze yet he still weeps for his lost daughter,he knows what she
does here,do you think that he is happy? Answer me you evil swine! Swore the
angry Obioha and Nze Okoro retorted, yes curse me if you like but I will still
say this,if you care for them, why not lets work together and get them sent back
to their people! He said and Nze Omenihu asked, back to do what,if you were that
retired Ochiagha who is now an nze and you knew what she did for a living
throughout the nine years she has stayed here, will you be happy to have her
back? And with those children and lest I forget, they are son’s and daughters of
umuezumezu as no stranger can be allowed to visit their bed, which is why it was
made so,they belong to us,as nze’s we stand as father’s to those children
because they are our sons and daughters sired by our own sons,we cannot let
them leave! Do you hear! He said angrily and Nze Okoro spoke,oh shut and stop
saying that the children belong to us,actually have I not caught you sneaking
the compound of one of those girls? So you should speak clearly and tell us
that you are the father of one of those children! Said nze Okoro and Nze Ohiagu
stood up and said, okoro,it is obvious that you have nothing to say but it is
also obvious that you called us here to insult us,however,I will not demean
myself to bantering words with you,I will do as you have suggested and bring
the matter before Eze Nwakaibeya, have a good night,I take my leave! Said the
eldest nze as he got up and walked out, soon others followed him out.
As the Ochiagha walked out that Evening,he spoke to
Nwokoike who was with Other prominent young men of Umuezumezu which included
prince Nwude,Okike asked,Nwoko, have you sent the messengers,he asked and Nwoko
replied,Okike,I sent five of your servants ahead as you ordered with over one
hundred warriors to accompany them thoughout the night journey and to help them
with the loads of five hundred tubers of yams, they also took along ten he
goats, twenty five cocks and one hundred jars of palm wine! Said Nwokoike and
prince Nwude said,Okike, lets go to my father for the beads before he retires
from the Ovu,he is expecting us! He said and the Ochiagha nodded and went
out to his horse, the riders were accompanied by foot guard warriors.
As the noise drew nearer,Eze Nwakaibeya smiled and
tought to himself,ah finally Okike is getting married, now he can have some
peace from all this nze’s bothering him to ask Okike to take their daughters as
wife but funny enough,he chose to marry from umuoleke,He nwakaibeya would have
liked Okike to be husband to his daughter adaeze but it is obvious that
Nwokoike is also making moves towards her,he too is a great credit to
Umuezumezu just like Okike! As he tought,Okike and prince Nwude and nwokoike
and many other rich sons of ezumezu walked into the Ovu and greeted, Ekele dir
eze nwakaibeya! They said in unison and Nwakaibeya said, okike I am sure that
you are here for the Ezinne and Ezinna beads, correct? He asked and Ochiagha
Okike replied, Yes onye eze,I am here for the beads but I also want the Ichie
Ezinna title caps, fan and neck beads too! He said and Nze Ugonna got on hearing
that and shouted Che che che Ezumezu kwenu and they all replied, ehhyyaaa! And
he sat down again and said, yes go and let them know that we are men in
umuezumezu! Eze Nwakaibeya spoke again,I am sure that you know the prices for
these beads, the Ezinne bead costs ,five hundred tupence, the Ezinna bead costs
five hundred tupence, the Ezinna title caps, fans and neck beads also costs five
hundred tupence, making it a total of two thousand and five hundred tupence, can
you support tha? He asked and Ochiagha Okike opened a bag hanging on his
shoulder and counted out the ETANI and gave it to Nze ugonna who also counted
it and confirmed it complete and eze nwakaibeya spoke and said,Ugonna,go inside
and bring him the items, the Nze got up and went into the inner lodges and
returned with the items tied in an expensive akwaugwu material meant for such
items and gave it to Okike who saluted the onye eze and his men and walked out
with his fellows.
The Ezinne bead and Ezinna bead signifies that a woman
is significantly well brought up and in those parts,to marry a wife, one had to
buy an ezinne bead and ezinna bead for the bride’s parents, they buy this bead
from the eze of the grooms town, and later they also go to purchase the same
type of bead, from the eze of the brides town, each town has their own beading
style or fashionnbut if a suitor is a rich one,he can also purchase an Ezinna
title cap or fan or neck bead for the brides father from either the eze of his
town or the eze of the bride’s town, even being able to purchase the ezinna cap
or neck bead or fan is show enough of proof of wealth on the side of a
groom, but to buy the three, fan, cap and neck bead shows extreme wealth on the
side of the groom and if for any reason a groom purchases this three items from
the eze of their town and also makes the same purchase from the eze of the
bride’s town,it will be a thing to talk about for many years, infact,if it is
purchased from the eze of the grooms town, then the bride’s father is
automatically an Ichie at the grooms town but if it is purchased at the brides
town, then her father automatically becomes an ichie in their land,it is a title
to be very proud of, people are not allowed to take this titles at random,no
matter who you are,it is a title that signifies the importance of having a
daughter and can only be given to a man by his daughters husband(s),many men go
as far as giving etani in secret to their daughters suitors to buy this titles
for them, while many suitors promise their bride’s father to buy this title for
them if their daughter is well behaved, the Ezinne and ezinna bead means that
the children of this marriages are acknowledged by the eze’s of both lands and
if a woman defaults and is sent back to her people for bad behaviour and the
beads are returned to eze’s and the etanies given back to the groom, this is a
shame as any child or children whose mothers are disgraced thus are become
outcasts, they have no inheritance and their maternal parents have had no
inheritance from any father to show atht they are legally of any background in
any community, Infact,to be returned back after marriage is a shame brought
upon the entire community and the name Ezinne or ezinna (Good father or good
mother) is insulted, all ezinne’s and ezinna’s are obligated to expel your
parents from the towns Ezinne and ezinna Congregatings and functions and the
said woman will also be seen as a curse and thus sent away to go and look for
better parents as she has disgraced her parents that they are not good tutors
and wards and the worst disgrace is for a man to be stripped of the Ichie title
after marriage because of a daughters misbehaviour, because even if the man is
dead and his daughter defaults, the title will be stripped him in absentia and
the memory of the dead will be insulted, this beads are thus given to the
bride’s parents to keep or wear and when ever the bride is dead, the living
relatives will take this bead to the eze ‘s of their lands and the groms land
to claim the price of the beads and it is always a thing of joy when one is
called to the Ovu eze and your mother’s bead money is given to your relatives
who will now aknowledge you as their sisters son and the father’s land will
also aknowledge that the person is also their son whose mother served her
purpose faithfully and her, memory glorified,if in any even a son of such a
woman comes into trouble with his fatherland,he will be given full refuge by
his motherland who have reaped the fruit of their sisters labour, thus the price
of the beads are highly price, enough to buy two portions of land, thus such
children will be given lands even by their maternal relatives in the case of an
emergency and their fatherland can not still deny them of any of their rights
as full blooded sons of the land whose mothers beads can buy land in their
father land and in their motherland, thus a woman must strive to maintain her
integrity during marriage to make her children lords in her homeland and in her
husbands homeland.
Enyidiya was thrilled, her father and mother had been
counselling her for over five days now and she was anxious, today, she will
become a woman, the wife of an Ochiagha, infact, the most famous and most feared
Ochiagha withing sixty days walk from Umuoleke, she had been dressed and well
scented,hr hairs combed and weaved and her toenails and fingernails well
polished, she radiated the natural beauty of her environment, her father had been
sitting outside all day, greeting and welcoming visitors and well wishers, their
compound which had been polished shone with neatness, the umuoleke music band
and singers gave out melodious music known as nkwa Nme-nme,the compound was
over crowded, the Ochiagha’s messengers had arrived by dawn, accompanied by
around a hundred warriors and bull wagons pulling heavy loads of yams and goats
and cocks,FIVE HUNDRED YAM! Wowthey made it clear that the Ochiagha and his
comrades and friends will arrive later that day,and those kind of people do not
eat cassava, that statement had already been made clear by his yam gifts, the
messengers said that they had journeyed all night and had arrived the town by
dawn, they had been accosted by the Umuoleke warriors and when they had told who
they came to see, they had been led to Mazi Nmaju who acknowledged knowing them
but even at that the Onye isi nche of the Umuoleke people had left behind many
warriors at mazi nmaju’s residence to ensure that protocols were adhered to,the
entire place was lively,The Ochiagha of umuoleke,Ochiagha Ohiagu had gone with
a hundred and fifty warriors to the towns gate to await the arrival of the
great ezumezu warlord and by noon, the procession of about three hundred foot
guard warriors and about twenty riders which had commenced their journey at the
earliest hours of the morning arrived at the towns gate and was met ochiagha
Ohiagu and they stopped and exchanged salutations and peace talks protocols and
then the entire troop continued to Uhsulo village in umuoleke which is where
Mazi nmaju lived, their arrival at the compound caused a lot of commotion as the
crowd became uncontrollable, people cheered and hailed the great ezumezu warlord
and native masquerade groups gave thrilling performances, though the ochiagha
had sent one hundred atumakwus of palm wine, mazi nmaju had also ordered for two
hundred more atumakwu’s of palm wine thus most people were already drunk by the
time Ochiagha Okike and his men arrived, the occasion lasted for over four hours
and okike spent etani like water, later, the brides father and mother were taken
by horse with okike and prince nwude to Eze Ohaneme of Umuoleke to purchase the
ezinne and ezinna beads from the eze of umuoleke,he also paid for the Ichie
title caps, fan and neck beads for the brides father at umuoleke and also handed
over the ezinne and ezinna bead and ichie title cap,fan and neckbead of
umuezumezu to eze Ohaneme who presented then accordingly to mazi nmaju and he
gave a short speech saying that such marriages between two great lands like
ezumezu and umuoleke is highly encouraged and he also made his happiness known
to having the Ochiagha of Umuoleke as a husband of one of their
daughters, meaning that his land will always have the support of the ezumezu
warriors as long as okike reighns as warlord of Umuezumezu,he was happy for
mazi nmaju who is now an ichie in umuoleke and umuezumezu, thus he can speak
and be heard even at umuezumezu and can thus be a diplomat should the need
arises, afterall, all towns respected their own title beads and Mazi nmaju is a
now titled man of Umuezumezu, the celebrants all left for mazi nmaju’s residence
and on their arrival, the uproar was beyond belief, mazi nmaju had become an
ichie in both Umuezumezu and in Umuoleke,Ochiagha okike shook Umuoleke
thoughout their nine villages and by mid evening,he mounted his horse with his
new bride in the presence of the entire community, and his friends, prince nwude
and Nwokoike and the rich sons of ezumezu that had horse which were a rare
sight and rode out of the town,he had given a fity tupence gift to a
delighted chibuzor and had also given ten tupence to chidiebere and ten tupence
to Akunna, infact, chibuzor had acted very proprie torial about the Ochiagha
during the whole festivity and he it was that said who was given what and he
promised to come and visit his sister after the three months of Imata di
after-marriage season was over, the warriors left the town by nightfall and
arrived Umuezumezu by midmorning just before cockcrow and immediately,Ochiagha
Okike had brought out five goats for his warriors and two hundred tubers of
yams and fifty atumakwu’s of palm wine which he had kept specially for his
warriors,he had given them fresh pepper, onions, salt and a lot of palm oils and
also they went to wake up the village musicians and began to sing and make
marry while the Ochiagha went to sleep with his new bride, Prince Nwude danced
and sang himself hoarse,he was delighted for his friend and he stayed till day
break before continuing to his fathers house but the ezumezu warriors did not
leave their Ochiagha’s house till evening, they simply ate and danced and
merried
Ehhnn nne, have you heard? Ochiagha okike has brought
home his wife, nwanyinme said to Obiageri, nwanyinma was Nze Okoro’s wife but
Obiageri her friend was the wife of a plantain merchant and Obiageri replied,is
that so, I heard the noise two nights ago,in that case, today is supposed to be
her first traditional outing to the stream, wont we go? She asked and nwanyima
said, but nne that is why I came to call you,I and all the nkwonta women and
daughters are prepared to give her the required welcome,I am sure she knows the
tradition, said Nwanyinma and Obiageri said, then what are we waiting for, lets go
to the stream, she said and Nwanyinma stood up and they both left for the stream.
As Enyidiya was going to the stream for the first
encounter with the Umuada’s she felt very shy,she had had a very wonderfull two
days with her new husband, she had eaten and fed very stupendously on yams and
all manner of rich soup, infact, she had already forgotten what cassava tasted
like and this morning, the Ochiagha had advised her on how to behave and also
made it clear that she should beware of Nwanyinma, nze Oko’s wife, she was the
leader of the nkwonta women ,a very notorious riot squad as defined by Ochiagha
okike, she was accompanied by Amobi and Madukaku.
Listen women of nkwonta and ezumezu,we all know how
this is done,we are simply to toy with her a bit,but no unmarried girl is
allowed to talk rudely to her,do not forget that she is the wife of an
ochiagha, wife to a high council member,an Nze,you will be flogged if you cross
your bounds and it will not be wise to annoy the warriors by insulting the wife
of their Ochiagha,so I will do the talking and send her back home the first
time, all you are to do is to jeer and boo,no insults but if she returns with
the Ochiagha as we instruct her to do,we will make her our friend and treat her
to a very sweet welcome this night, said Nwanyinma.
As the dark skinned ebony beauty named enyidiya walked
up to the stream,it was crowded with women and children and girls and boys
washing, bathing and fetching water, the stream guard warriors were standing a
bit far away watching the scene, and as she arrived, everyone hushed up,and she
took her water pot and bent down to fill it with water and suddenly she heard a
voice say,hey you! Who are you? And what do you think that you are doing at our
stream? The voice asked as a woman stepped up close to her and the crowd
gathered round them as Enyidia tried to speak and the woman said, speak up,who
are you? How dare you come to ur
stream and try to fetch water without our permission, don’t you know that people
own and clean this water? Answer me! Said the woman in mock anger a,d enyidiya
replied,I am sorry! And the woman asked, what is your name and where are you
from? And Enyidiya replied, I am enyidiya from Umuoleke, wife to Ochiagha okike§
she said and the woman laughed,ha! You! Wife to who? Our own ochiagha okike? He
cannot marry such a cassava eating creature like you! No way,as if we don’t
have fine girls in umuezumezu! Said the woman and Enyidiya stuttered shy
and said,Eziokwu,Okike bu dim! She said and the woman said, that is a lie,ok,if
you are telling the truth, then go back and tell him that we refused you to
fatch water from our stream until he comes to introduce you to us the right
way,is that clear,(the woman turned to the crowd and said, mothers and daughters
of Ezumezu, have I spoken for us all? And they all replied ayhhh!)so Enyidiya
got up and took her water pot and left with Amobi and maaduka while the stream
guards watched and as she went away while the women booed and
cheered, nwanyinma,a mother of five children turned and said to the women, listen
all of you,if she does return with Okike as we have asked for, then acknowledge
her importance to him and give her her due respects, she is the wife of an
Ochiagha,is that clear? She asked and they all chorused, eehhyahh, thirty
minutes later,Enyidiya returned to the stream accompanied by Ochiagha Okike and
Amobi and madukaku and six guard warriors, his usual number of guards
everyday,he was dressed in tight fitting akpukpoagu dress and sandals with his
matchet tied to his waist and a small pouch in his hands and amobi was pulling
a small goat behind him while Maduka was carrying a small basket containing ten
tubers of yams, and as he arrived,he greeted, nde nne na umu ada nde Ezumezu,I
greet you all,he said and they replied, eehhyyaaa! And nwanyinma spoke,Okike, why
insult us thus, are our daughters not good enough for oyu that you go and bring
a stranger amongst us,are we not good enough for you? She asked in mock anger
(she too was from egbelubi) and Ochiagha Okike replied ah my wives, who said
that your daughters are not good enough, infact they are too good, they are meant
for princes and Eze’s and I am just a warrior,please pardon me,I didn’t even
know that I would have been considered a worthy husband material for such
glorious women like your daughters! He said and Nwanhyinma spoke and said,we
will accept your apology on one condition, you will buy palm wine and goat meat
for us today or else no pardon and Ochiagha okike asked ,and how much will this
palm wine cost? And the woman counted every woman and girl there and said, ten
tupence! And Ochiagha Okike counted some etani and gave it to her and said, that
is twenty tupence, buy a lot for yourselves and here is a goat for you all too(
He handed over the he goat to them and also gave them the basket of ayms) and
said,I hope I and my new wife are forgiven? He asked and the women
chorused, eehhhyyyahhh oooo! And the Ochiagha turned and marched away with
his men dignifyngly and Nwanyinma said to Enyidiya,ah our fine wife, welcome to
Umuezumezu, this particular village is called Nkwonta,my name is Nwanyinma, wife
of Nze okoro, come and fetch water, you will be with us today as we will cook and
eat this goat and yams and also drink the palm wine together, said the woman as
the women crowded round her and they began to chatter noisily, enyidiya who had
partaken in this ritual in their place wa s ashamed and very self conscious
about herself, her husband had warned her that they may want to detain her, thus
he had instructed that Amodi and Maduka remain with her until she returned
home, they still had over two months of Imta di left and he was not going to waste
another day of in,funny enough,Olanma was also in the crowd at the stream, they
had a wonderfull time, they all trooped to Nze Okoro’s house, where they
slaughtered the goat and cooked a very delicious goat meat pepper soup and they
bought many atumakwu’s of palm wine and also cooked pounded yam and peppersoup
and had a beautifull day singing and dancing and feasting,Enyidiya was given a
befitting welcome by the Nkwonta women and daughters and she later began to
relax and also began to feel at home amidst them, infact, she was almost drawn
into Nwanhyinma’s gossip circle had not the Ochiagha sent one of his servants
to come and fetch her by mid-evening.
Nze Okoro,I was told that you are against me and my
servants, why is that so? Eze Nwakaibeya asked a baffled Nze Okoro and the Nze
replied, onye Eze,I am not a mad that I now have to stand up and challenge a
mountain to a contest, how can I be against you and your servants,I also serve
you! Said the Nze and The Eze spoke yet again and said,Then Okoro, why was I told
that you are vehemently against my servants whom I instructed to serve my sons
and entire sons of umuezumezu by bearing more son’s and servants who will serve
the throne of Ezumezu for ever, why? He asked and Nze Okoro became ashamed and
said,ah Onye Eze,I think I understand what you mean,if it is about the four
girls, yet I asked that it be brought before you, that we send them home! He said
and the Onye Eze who was now obviously very angry said, Nze Okoro, mbaeluelu
killed my Ochiagha and in return they gave me females to bear more warriors and
Ochiagha’s for me,what is wrong in that? Do you think I am stupid? Has any non
ezumezu visited their bad that you would want to take them to be prostitutes?
Answer me now before I loose my temper? Said the enraged Onye eze and Nze Okoro
replied,Onye,I beg your forgiveness,I lacked understanding then,now I know
better, said the nze and Eze nwakaibeya spoke again and said,I made that
rule, the women were ordered to give me sons fathered by Ezumezu sons, how dare
you insinuate that mother’s of the son’s of Ezumezu land are prostitutes? That
is a grave insult,it takes more than just age and wealth to be an Nze,it
takes,Wisdom, knowledge and understanding to be where you are now, don’t
disappoint me,they were instructed to bear us servants and warriors ,son’s of
Ezumezu and I heard that you refered to their sons as children who shouldn’t be
equals with your children, who are your children, and who are the fathers of
their children? If you have any evidence that a non indigene of Umuezumezu has
visited their bed, then their children shall forever be inferior and beneath
your children abut if they have only served sons of ezumezu land, then their
children shall be equals with everyone else in this land and I hope to nze’s
amongst them too,so tell me,has an outsider been to meet with them? Asked the
onye eze? And nze Okoro shook his head to say no and the onye eze said,ah in
that case, the children in question are undoubtably of the blood of
Umuezumezu,am I right? He asked and the Nze nodded in the affirmative and the
Eze said, then how do you want a son or daughter of ezumezu to be inferior to
your children? He asked and Nze Okoro looked more confused and turned to Nze
Ugonna for help but Nze Ugonna knew that once Nwakaibeya was in such a mood you
either shup of or you get killed! ,he again apologised to nwakaibeya dn the
onye Eze said,Okoro, let this be the last time you insult my intelligence,I am
not a fool and if you are against my servants, you are also against me,those
women serve a very important purpose and once they are able to pay for
land, their sons and daughters shall be respected and given equall opportunities
in this lands, have I made myself clear? He asked and nze okoro nodded and Onye
Eze Nwakaibeya said,Okoro, from this day onwards,it shall be your duty to ensure
that their children are well protected from ignorant people such as your
self, use your office and status and ensure that no one demeans their place or
position in life and also make sure that the moral complex of those children
will equall that of any Ezumezu son or daughter,in other words,I here make you
their father figure till I die,and I shall demand of them from you,I
sthat clear? He asked and Nze Okoro speechlessly nodded.
Bia Maduka, you will go to Nne Amarachi and buy me six
pieces of fresh fish, the type they call azu nmiri,it is sold for three long
ones for a tupence,so buy for two tupence, that will be six big fishes, also
buy,Mpia-mpia five pence,please hurry-up,dim will soon be back ( by dim,she
meant,Her husband,Ochiagha Okike),and Maduka spoke and said, Da enyidiya,De
Okike does not like Azu Nmiri,he like Azu Okpu, roasted croacker fish,he said
and Enyidiya turned and said, taa, will you tell me what to feed him, don’t
worry,I’ll make him like it because that is what I like, but however, buy
azu-okpu of one tupence! She said and gave the boy the money and the young
seventeen year old boy took off,Enyidiya was already heavy with pregnancy, she
did nothing but cook eat and sleep, she already looked well fed and rich, she was
now expensively clothed, she could remember the first month of her marriage, many
prominent and rich daughters or wives of Ezumezu land had come to greet her,she
was petted for very long, infact,Adaeze,Eze nwakaibeya’s daughter ahd also come
to see her and they had easten a plate of pounded yam and Ughu soup with goat
meat,ah,she ahd become a good friend, now Onye isi nche Nwokoike is telling her
that he intends to marry Adaeze, which was a good thing but she Enyidiya was no
longer allowed to move about with a servant and a warrior guard, that was a bit
too much for her, infact, even now,one name Ugwumba was standing outside the
compound to halt and question visitors before they can enter the Ochiagh’s
residence, her junior brother Chibuzor had also been stopped from seeing her
because he could not explain himself properly, and the warrior was not the type
to leve his post to go and confirm anybody’s identity,if he does not know you
then bad luck because you will not enter, had it not been for Amobi who was
returning from the farms with the other servants and on seeing Chibuzor,he told
Ugwumba that the boy was da Enyidiya’s Junior Brother,Chibuzor would have
stayed outside till the return of the Ochiagha, sometimes, she felt like a
prisoner, but she could always go out but Ugwumba was sure to follow, ther was no
shooeing him off,he was tree,to tall to push down, she sighed, her father had
once visited umuezumezu when he had been invited for the annual umuezumezu Ndi
Ichie Celebrations,he had shone like a gem then and had visited the newly
married couple,he had brought them some new decorations of bull clothing
materials used as bedside footmats Ovu sitting mats,he had left that same day
with promises to come and see them whenever he could, but enyidiya did not miss
her home, she was constantly entertained by the six servants who were mostly
young boys of fifteen, sixteen and seventeen and they always told great tales
and stories and Amobi could sing ,really he could, she was always well
entertained at night, and food, hey! She had never seen a barn to compare with
her husbands barn in nkwonta, though she has never seen any other barn in
Umuezumezu at all,but there was so much to eat and drink and the warriors came
regularly to greet her and bring her bush meats and rodents trapped or killed
on their forest patrols, she was content and Amobi and Maduka would soon be of
to the Nche lair with the next three months, their service time with Okike was
up and it was near time for their much worked for reward,to be an onye Nche,to
be able to read those scribllings that made the nche people superior to all
around them, they walked with pride knowing that the only way to an Nze title is
through the nche service, infact, the only way to anything is through the Nche
service,Amobi had already purchased his new nche matchet and spear and bow and
arrows and was ready to go to the lair for the next two years of training, soon
Maduka returned with the items and she collected them and went back to her
kitchen and continued the ofe ughu that she was cooking and later she
called,Maduka, please come and bring out the yams for cooking and pounding! She
stated
OJimba was a very good man and it will pain him to
loose such a friend but as Ogun walked into his house ,he was pained, several
months ago, pink coloured people had entered and conquered their land ,it was
such an unexpected affair that no one could do anything until it was too
late, then they had taken the whole neighbouring towns of youruba land captive
and now wanted to penetrate the yonder lands behind the great river
Ochanja, they sought for directions and the already weaked by torture indigenes
of Iremo-Igboro land in ijebu-imusin had told them that a fire stick maker by
the name of Adeogun was a very popular person amongst the wete-etani
people, thus the pink men who spoke as if they had hot coal on their tongues had
come and tied up Ogun and his wives and children and threatened to wipe them
out if ogun did not go and pretend that he had come to make a purchase and then
use the enquiry to estimate and asses the military strength of the Ochanja and
ala-elugwu people, and to ensure that he neither ran away or gave out the
information of the impending attack, they asked one of the new traitors in
iremo-igboro to accompany Ogun on this trip, the man’s name Adisa L’adokan, they
had journeyed to elugwu, adisa had tried to be friendly and discovered that Ogun
was annoyed and would never forgive him, then adisa had began to use his new
found powers of the pink people to threaten Ogun,Just make sure that all goes
wee and you may yet see your worthless family again,he would constantly repeat
to ogun during the trip,Ogun had stayed the normal five days and had gone round
the town for the last time,a town that knew him so well as like one of them, a
town he had been visiting every month for over twelve years, now he was to
betray them,he wept inwardly and cursed Adisa with all his being but he could
do nothing,he was handicapped, his family was staring death in the face and he
alone could save them seven sons and two daughters and his two wives! Ah Osa!
And Okun, why have you done this to me,he wailed inwardly!,as he got down from
the bullcart wagon infront of his house,Adisa went in and later came out with
the pink man known as capiti simiti ( captain Smith), a british mercenary soldier
now on the payroll of the Romans army, the captain called the
interpreter, adeolu, Deyyolu! Ask the man for the situations report, whats the
fighting strength of the weytey-tani people or something like that, said the
captain to his mate,a roman by the name of centurion Alexander Boerst and Ogun
tightened his fist and got a slap for the insolent look on his face and he
began to speak, the people are not expecting you but they nonetheless very ready
to protect themselves and there is one more thing,Ochiagha Okike,he will not be
easy to conquer! Stated Ogun and the interpreter made the interpretations and
ended it by saying, sah mastah sah! He say one general ochawa,he not eezzy for
konker! Stated the interpreter and captain smith made a mental record of the name
of general Ochawa.
As the horse man rode into town furiously,he was
stopped by the Ezumezu warriors and after explaining himself,he was led to Eze
Nwakaibeya nd then the Eze sent for Ochiagha Okike and Onye isi-nche Nwokoike
and when they arrived, the Eze said,Okike and Nwoko,ala-Elugwu is fallen! Said
the disturbed Nwakaibeya to a very surprised Ochiagha Okike and he turned to
the fleeing warrior who had ridden non-stop day and night to get to Umuezumezu
and said, warrior, who are you and what news did you bring?he asked and the
warrior spoke,Ochiagha,my name is Onye-nche uzorchi,I am from Awgu village in
ala-elugwu,our town was attacked seven nights ago by pink coloured men and they
have killed everyone and Onye-eze ugwunechemba is dead,I saw them kill him with
my own eyes,Ochiagha agude died gallantly too, they have also destroyed Ochanja
and only women and children are left and they are marching eastwards towards
this place, they may have reached Egbelubi by now! Stated the warrior and
Ochiagha Okike wailed for his friend Agude and swore and said to Eze
Nwakaibeya,Onye eze,I do not know their numbers, but I will send scouts to Umule
and see if we can have some specific informations from there, meanwhile,we must
prepare for all eventualities, thus we will begin to move our foods and
livefeeds to a safe location before the return of the scouts,if it is a false
alarm, then no harm is done but if it is true,we will involve,Umule, umuoleke and
Abayi at once, they are our closest allies,Mbaeluelu may not want to align with
us,said the Onchiagha and Onye eze Nwakaibeya said,do as you please
ochiagha, this is your department! Stated the old ruler and Ochiagha Okike bowed
and went out at once with nwokoike.
Okike had sent a fast message to Ochiagha Ohiagu and
the Ochiagha of Umuoleke had sent back a fast response stating they will begin
preparations for their defence and Okike also got a fast response from umule,it
was confirmed,Ebgelubi had been wiped out,it was claimed that the strange
aggressors had a very noisy weapon now popularly known as the thunder-stick,it
was said to make a loud noise when pointed at a person and afterwards a hole
will appear on the said person and the person would fall and die instantly,it
was even said to be able to shatter skulls, before two days,Umuezumezu was
filled up with fleeing neighbouring villagers, they had nowhere else to run to
but to Ochiagha Okike.Soon Eze Ohaneme and his chief warriors and warlords
visited Umuezumezu, they had been invited by Eze nwakaibeya,it was no longer a
rumour, the one hundred and seven towns of the lower niger was under attack by
pink people with thunder-sticks!
Eze Ogbulafor of Umule also came with his
warriors and surprisingly,Eze Onyia of Mbaeluelu and his Ochiagha Omenuko also
attended the meeting,it was agreed that they will each donate fifteen thousand
warriors from each town and march to Ahiafor at Mbise and lay ambush for the
visitors and possibly chase them back into the ocean, meanwhile, all the towns
along the way would move their people, foods and animals backwards to Umuoleke
and Okpuala,,thus within twenty four hours of heavy activities, the unitd
warriors led by Ochiagha okike,Ochiagha Ohiagu and Ochiagha Omenuko and two
other Ochiagha’s from two neighbouring towns, moved off for Ahiafor, they marched
quietly through the thick jungles and avoided open roads and tracks, they hadthe
upper hands, this was their land, they knew it better than any pink man would, and
with forty eight hours, they arrivedat Ahiafor, just intime,to witness the end of
a battle between the warriors of Ahiafor land and the pink people, the pink
people were expert warriors, they moved fast as if they knew that any delay
would simply take away their advantage of a surprise attack, they were busy
gathering food and animals in preparation for a fast launch of attck at the
next village, infact they had already sent a fifty man scout team ahead to scout
out the next town and send back some warriors to bring reports, the scout team
were silently apprehended and silenced by the Ochiagha Okike squad, the okike
team, divided into five teams, four teams of fifteen thousand men each built a
round military wall around the entire land of Ahiafor while one team belonging
to Ochiagha Ajumbu of Umuobar moved forward through the jungles as a scout and
silencing maching to keep the flow of the enemy in check and bring back reports
to the main military team, thus any small scout unit or message unit of the pink
people that came out of Ahiafor or came close to Ahiafor were quietly silenced
by Ochiagha Ajumbu,a fearlessly ruthless warrior of a very brave ancestry of
warriors, and by evening as the pink men who loved to march by night were
preparing their formations to move out of the fallen Ahiafor,The Sixty thousand
warriors of the united four towns fell upon them, they did not expect it,it was
a massacre, they had underestimated the bushmen and had paid dearly for
it,infact, the soldiers which comprised of over thirty thousand white trained
mercenaries and over ten thousand natives of yorubaland who had joined them had
been slaughtered like animals and by night fall, not a single pink man was
standing, the united warriors lost over two thousand soldiers and over three
hundred were wounded, but they caught, the commanders of the legions, two white
and proud looking thieves,by the name of capitin simit and capitina alusinda
(Alexander),the united warriors, mearched onstealthily towards alaimo and wiped
out the small unit left there to watch over the fallen imo people, and from
there they marched on again through the forests to Mbaitolu and discovered that
mbaitolu was yet untouched but they too had heard of the battle and due to the
northwards positioning of their town, they could run nowhere for help and they
had prepared to fight till the end but they were delighted at the arrival of
Okike and his warriors and they added ten thousand more warriors to the okike
team and moved westwards to ala-elugwu and entered ebgelubi on the eight day
and also wiped out the small unit left there to torment the remaining ebgelubi
people who were prisoners in their own lands and then they moved on to alaoji
and happily descended on the small units of pink bandits left behind to keep
watch over the alaoji people which were prisoners, and finally they arrived at
Ochanja and came face to face with a bigger unit of about twenty thousand
stanby soldiers and another big battle ensued, the okike team had a very upper
hand as they would attack for an hour slay as much as they could and flee back
into the jungles,it was a very effective jungle metheod that frustrated the
efforts of the white warriors with their dane guns and after sixth flooding of
the jungle method, the frustrated white soldier decided to chase them into the
forests and there they met their doom as the whole forests round Ochanja was
swarming with native warriors simply waiting for them to do just that, the
small-small attackst with about five thousand men who wiil go kill some whites
and run back into the bush was to create the impression of a batch of native
monkeys who knoew nothing about warfare and the foreigners fell into the trap
and did not last five hours as they had nowhere to run to and the few that
managed to flee out of Ochanja only succeeded in running into the waiting arms
of Ochiagha Ajumbu and his men and they showed no mercy.the remaining white men
on their big boats set sail at once for the open sea but Ochiagha Okike sent
out over five thousand men with the big boats of the Ndoki people and they
chased after them, the entire battlelasted a week and the entire lines and
villages and towns along the shores of the great rivers Ochanja to imo was
purged of pink thieves, and afterwards, the united warriors separated into five
units and formed a circle to encompass the entir one hundred and seven towns of
the lower niger and searched the entire, lands, hills, forests, farms and jungles
for three months before reuniting completely at alaimo, the ezumezu warriors had
two prisoners,Captain smith of the british empire and captain Alexander of the
Roman empire, they shared the thunder sticks amongst the entire one hundred and
seven villages and the caught youruba traitors were made to tutor the other
villagers, but it was agreed that after one month, they all be killed to avoid
have a virus in the lands of the lower niger, but smith and Alexander was
trophy,to show people that it was no story, there indeed were pink men in the
world and they wore bowls on their heads!
The warriors had sent messages of their victory ahead
to their Eze’s and each ruler had returned to his lands with his people and had
began to re’arrange their lands and began to prepare their lands for
farming, the ezumezu people had heard of the great feats of their chiagha and
singers sang his praise everywhere, they entered Umuezumezu, iin the fourth month
of their departure, though they had lost about three hundred and eighty
warriors, they stillwere victorious, they arrived with their pink prisoners and
the crowd jeered and booed at the prisoners and were even ready to stone them
if not for their warriors, the Ezumezu warriors came back with over one thousand
thunder sticks, over three hundred bull wagons, five hundred horses and a lot of
swords, daggers and many things which they did not know what they were.
As Ochiagha Okike stepped into his home which had been
polished and cleaned in waiting for him,he smelt a very delicious smell and he
went to his wife’s room and saw her seated on her bed,a baby in her arms and
the Ochiagha bent down and looked at the infant and asked, when did it happen?
And enyidiya replied, nine days ago! And the Ochiagha said, has she been named?
And enyidiya burst out laughing and said,it’s a boy and has not been named
yet,I was waiting for you,I knew that you’ll come back to me! She said and the
Ochiagha said, what about our barns and goats? And she replied,Onye isi Nche hid
them along with Eze Nwakaibya’s store, but they were returned yesterday, though
many were spoiled due to the heat of bad storage, but we still have over ten
thousand tubers of yams left,it will last until the next harvest,as for the
goats,Amobi and Maduka will leave for Umuoleke tomorrow, they were moved to my
perants place for safe keeping, they are intact, six thousand heads! And the
etani you gave me before you left, three thousand,it is still intact,I have only
spent about two hundred in the etani to feed myself and your servants,we all
stayed at my father’s place ,she said and the Ochiagha nodded and as she wanted
to give him the money,he laughed and said, keep it,it’s for you, tomorrow, tell
nwanyhinma to gather the Nkwonta people,my son will be named tomorrow! Said the
Ochiagha decisively and his wife nodded. The next day,the naming ceremony was
help in a festive way and the boy was named,Ikennaya.
Almost one year after the great battle of the pink
skinned thieves,Eze Nwakaibeya became very ill and it was obvious to all the he
was near to the end of his life time and he showed no fear of his impending
demise,on the contrary,he went ahead to give his son specific instructions on
what to do with the power he is about to leave for him,he showed the young man
all he needed to know and how to control the Nze’s and take control of all
situations,he however made an important plea to the young man Nwude one early
morning as they were returning from inspecting the barns which contained over
one hundred and fifty thousand tubers of yams,Nwude my son,You will be Eze
soon! He said and Nwude replied,Ha nnam! Do not speak as if you will be leaving
me soon! He said and his father continued as if he had not spoken, listen, you
must never show sentiments of regrets in public, the only sentiment you can show
in public is laughter and anger,no regrets and furthermore, those four young
girls,do not let them be put to shame,I made a just judgement over the death of
Udenedeude,I ordered them to give me sons and daughters in replacement for my
lost warrior servant,I ordered that their bed be pure and for only Umuezumezu
and I am satisfied with my own judgement, thus this sons and daughters and their
entire generations can never be mocked by anyone as they were sired by only
sons of Umuezumezu, thus by ridiculing them,we ridicule ourselves,do not let Nze
Okoro have his way with them,do not be persuaded into sending them away, you
will only be sending our own sons into slavery, our land abhors slavery which is
why I made them bear sons sired by our sons thus we can never make them
slaves, they are qualified for the nche service like all other Ezumezu sons
andtheir daughters can marry and our beads will bear their value, the price of a
womans bridal bead pays for the land on which her children steps upon in their lands
and in their maternal home, the wealth that I will show you today is the etani
of peoples mother’s bridal beads which their maternal familys will one day come
to claim to ensure that the land which they trample on have been well paid for
by the dutifull labours of their mothers,do not disappoint them, they will
devour you if you make them slaves by giving them stories on the day they are
to give account of their mothers loyalty to them and their fatherlands! Said
the old man as they approached a large hut very deep inside the great walls of
the ovu eze, even Nwude had never been allowed near that section of the Ovu all
his life,it was guarded by over one thousand warriors, all completely nude, and
they were all still awaiting the confirmation of their ancestral evaluation by
their maternal relatives, thus anyone whose maternal relatives have claimed
their sister’s price and authenticated their children can never do guard duty
there again, thus any one on guard duty there is guarding their mothers
virtue,as the Onye arrived at the great stone hut with Nwude, the guards all
knelt down and bowed their heads to the onye Eze and said in unison,Ekele diri
Eze nwakaibeya! And he nodded very weakly and signalled for them to open the
hut and over fifty men positioned themselves on one side and pushed the great
stone blockade placed on the entrance to the stone hut away and he entered with
nwude and on one side he pointed out to a huge pileup of Akwaugwu sewn in a big
sack type and said, look,in each of this sacks is one hundred thousand tupence
and there over thirty thousand of those sacks there, those are bridal bead
etani,it cannot be spent, beware my son! It cannot be spent!!!?,it is well
documented! He pointed to another part of the hut, there my son is the etani of
my family and household,in each sack ( he pointed to similar sacks) he said,
contains one hundred thousand tupence, and I have about twenty thousand of such
sacks, you have more than enough to feed the ndi nche’s and ndi Nze’s for all
your life, the entire lands of Umuezumezu is yours, you do not sell land to a
non-indigene,your barns will yield over eight hundred thousand tubers of yams
every season,,the Ndoki people buy from me as much as one hundred to two
hundred thousand tubers every season, they buy from my servants, headed by my
chief store keeper,Nze Alozie and all documented by my chief book keeper,Nze
Ugonna, and after sales every season, you have over, four or five hundred
thousand tubers to eat and sell to your people should they have need to buy
from you,you have pepper, tomato, onions and all manner of fruits, you have over
three hundred thousand heads of goat to eat and be merry on,you have palm wine
trees to tap and drink from, you have over twenty thousand bulls for your
bullwagons, please do not look at the other end of that wall, the bridal bead
Etani, that is all that you can do to maintain your intergrity and control over
your lands, they your servants know that mutiny or disrespect immediately makes
them all slaves as no Eze will accept beads or bridal bead etani from anyone
else but you and your pure lineage and if you do not get sons before your
death, then Ezumezu will go into slavery, that is the law,if an Eze dies without
a son, their land is allowed to perish as no Eze will accept a substitute, the
end of the true lineage means the end of that land and its autonomy, other Eze’s
will take them slaves by force,it is the law and they know it and they cannot
fight the entire one hundred and six great lands in this part of the world, you
must stand tall, proud and fearless, nothing can happen to you,I repeat, nothing
can happen to you,do not take advice or receive cousell from your mother, sister
or wife,no woman must have any say in matters concerning the authority and
controls of the land,do you hear? He asked and Nwude nodded,he clearly
understood his father and it pained him to watch the old man formalise the hand
over of his rule over his lands and people while still alive but he also knew
that it was better so,you can never make mistakes if you have been forewarned
or prepared,Nwude, those pink skinned prisoners, I don’t know what to do with
them,we have no need for slaves as our laws and tradition makes a hard working
man eat the works of his hands, our servants like the opportunity given them to
actually earn their place in the society,do with them as you pleas, but,as soon
as I pass away, take one of those sacks, buy at least over twenty to thirty
thousand Ihyinyha’s for your warriors, arm them, prepare for any
eventualities, shake the lands a bit and let your neighbouring lands know that a
new ruler reigns in Umuezumezu,it is said that the glory of a ruler is in his
appearance! Do not look humble or quiet;let them know that your father tutored
you well before he passed on,it is an unspoken code of conduct for the Eze’s,they
will know that I spoke with you before I passed on and they will give you your
due respect and priviledges and fights too,if necessary, said the old
man,(trying to be funny),he coughed loudly and took up a sack and handed it
over to Nwude and said,I know that you have never been given this kind of etani
in your whole life, take the one hundred thousand tupence, begin to prepare to
take over, select carefully your guard warriors,at least about two thousand, arm
and cloth them in the Nche style of clothing, buy new matchets for them and
initiate them into your own loyalty league, they must always be with you night
and day,let the Ndi nze’s know that you must not be argued with, display wealth
whilst I live,so that none will judge your expenses if I am gone, your place
must fit you as you must fit your place, let none ever stand before you and show
no fear again, never! Is that clear! He said and Nwude nodded,he understood what
his father was trying to do,the old man wanted him to become a feared entity
now that he was still alive, thus when he was gone, the same fear and respect
will continue as he,Nwude will simply continue to exhume the same aura of fear
and respect that he had before his father’s demise,They both came out of the
hut and the Guards all Knelt and bowed and later pushed the stone wall into
place,Eze Nwakaibeya said,Nwude,as soon as you have given your appearance the
necessary upliftments,go to Ugonna, tell him to show you the scrolls and books
of all the transactions, tradings, laws, rules, lands and judgements, including the
code of the Nze’s ,tell him to show you their keeping place whilst I leave,it
may not be for long but I will wait a while for you,I hope that you understand?
He asked and Nwude nodded and his father turned and went away to his room
whilst Nwude mounted his horse and rode off to the Nche lair to see Ochiagha
Okike and onye is nche Nwokoike,he discussed with them about his need for an
enlarged security unit and their arming,Okike accepted the need but also made
it clear that it would cost as much as forty to fifty thousand tupence to arm
and uniquely clothe such a unit,Nwude showed no fear or retreat at the price,he
nodded in readiness and said,Okike,I need such a unit to be ready to travel to
Ala-Elugwu before twenty four hours! Ochiagha knew hat that implied,Nwakaibeya
had given full authority to his son! He acknowledged at once the new look of
confidence and maturity in the young man and was proud to be able to serve with
the new incoming regime,Ezz Nwude will surely shake this lands! Tought Okike
proudly, he then replied, Opara Eze ( no more Nwude),Nwude also acknowledged
the immediate change as understanding transpired between the two childhood
friends,one a warrior,the other a pince!,I will advice that you make it a unit
of two thousand and five hundred warriors, they will need to be changing shifts
every forty eight hours to also attend to their domestic obligations and
needs,he said and Nwude nodded and said,Okike, you are the warrior, give me yoyr
best two thousand and five hundred warriors, they should be ready to leave with
you and I tomorrow morning,Okike nodded, things had begun to unravel very
fast, the way Okike liked it to happen,Nwokoike stood up and bowed to his friend
and said,Opara Eze,I still find favour in you don’t i? he asked and Nwude
looked him in the eye and said,Nwoko, all things between you and I remains the
same,we both know our places, you still remain my frined,he said and got up to
leave. That night The Onye Ozi obodo Rode of with thirty warriors to clear
passage for prince nwude and his armada, they had to clear the way even unto
ala-Elugwu and back, the Onye-ozi obodo and his warriors were on horse back
riding speedily ahead to put distance between them and the army that will leave
in the morning.
As General Polonus Argonus walked into the senate hall
in Rome,he heard ridiculing laughter and sneers and whispers, how humiliating he
tought as he went to take his seat at his place in front of the senate and as
he bowed and hailed, greetings oh Ceasar Alphonsus! The emperor spoke,ah
Polonus,it is you! Said the emperor in a mocking tone,I heard that the bushmen
gave you and your mercenaries a beating! He said and the ashamed Polonus got up
and said,Ceasar,I can explain! Explain what? Asked the emperor, that you were so
beaten that they drove you and your mercenaries into the sea? Tell me,how did
this happen? he asked in a mocking tone again and the much ashamed general got
up holding a scroll and gave it to ceasar and said, most gracious ceasar, they
were not ignorant animals as we tought, they had a civilisation in those
jungles, they could actually read and write! He said and ceasar took the
akwa-nde and looked at the incoherent scribblings and asked,so what doesit say?
what does the writing mean? he asked and the general shrugged and said,I do not
know oh mighty ceasar but it is obvious that we underestimated them, which is
why we went there in the first place with mere mercenaries,I will like to ask
for a little time to retrain a real army and go back there and get you what you
want my lord! He said and Ceasar twisted his lips in a peculiar way and said,ah
polonus, you cooked this up to cover the shame that you have brought on the
entire Roman army, that you actually were beaten and chased into the seas by
mere native bushmen and you come up with this? He asked now really angry and
general Polonus bowed defeatedly and begged for pardon and still insistently
asked for a second chance and ceasar spoke and said,Polonus, tell me,how many
men will you need this time and how much time will it take to prepare them, he
asked and the general replied, My lord,I will need about two hundred thousand
battle trained soldiers and gladiators and I will need a maximum time of five
years to train them in the jungle warring method which I encountered in the great
rivers known as Ochanja,he said and ceasars eyes suddenly lit up,ah
Polonus, tell me about this famous general Ochawa that I have heard so much
about, did you meet him face to face? Asked the emperor! And general Polonus
replied,oh mighty Ceasar, indeed, the bush general wields great influence in
those parts and is very famous but he is no match for the Roman army! Said the
general and Ceasar replied,ha,so you say,but you were beaten silly by this bush
general named Ochawa (Ochiagha) (infact,as far
they were concerned in their ignorant way,the entire army of the lower niger
was of general Ochawa, their funny way of pronouncing Ochiagha, who would be none
other than Ochiagha Okike, the Ezumezu warlord) so
tell me,can you still face this fearsome bush general named Ochawa? He asked in
a lightly angry way and the very ashamed general Polonus spoke and said,My
lord,I was simply taken unawares,it will not happen again,I will go back and
get you your property,he said and the entire senate members guffawed with loud
laughter, and Ceasar shook his head and said,I have lost all confidence in you
Polonus, maybe, it might be that you are getting old and tired, just maybe! Said
the emperor and the general remained silent and Ceasar continued, all I wanted
was for you to go and get me that piece of real estate,a very valuable property
for my holidays and hunting sport and you come back with tales of woefull
defeat and tales of Educated bushmen and bush generals,do you think that I
should trust you again? He asked and the general remained silent again and
Ceasar spoke and said, what about your Greek friend, general Theophilus
Pappilon, was he beaten too? He asked and general Polonus nodded and Ceasar
asked again, what of the British soldiers of captain smith? He asked and the
general replied,Most mercifull Ceasar,Smith was taken captive,he is now either
undergoing torture in the bush villages or either dead!, said the general and
Ceasar burst out laughing loudly, including his senators, how funny he
said, educated bushmen! What a great tale( he then suddenly looked mean) listen
Polonus, you can have the entire two hundred thousand soldiers and gladiators
and also the five years for the training, but if you go back this time and gets
defeated,do not bother to come back, just execute yourself before I get to
you,do you understand? he said and the general bowed and said, most perfectly oh
great ceasar! you are most kind,oh mighty Ceasar! replied the general and
began to walk out of the great senate building as he could still hear whispers
and mocking laughters.
The army
marched through Umule the second day,the roads of most towns were lined with
warriors whose duty it was to ensure the safe passage of the prince of Ezumezu
on his journey,it was obvious that the onye ozi obodo had done his duty and by
evening they arrived Mbaeluelu, they did not stop, though tired and hungry, they
marched all night and arrived at Uhunrhun, where they sent some warriors into
the town to buy food of yams goats and palm oile, salt and papper, the prince
spent over one thousand tupence on each day meal, they bought as much as one
hundred and fifty goats, about six hundred tubers of yams, over fifty gallons of
palm oil, many sacks of salt which was always consumed at once, infact they had
to pay for young boys from the towns to fetch drinking water for them, thus they
drank up as much as two to three hundred gallons, thus each town they stopped at
talked of the great army that had passed by because they bought up every tuber
of yam that they could lay their hands on. And by the twelfth day, they arrived
ala-Elugwu,Eze Ikenna, the new eze of Ala-elugwu was delighted to see his
ezumezu counterpart and he had a large portion of land cleared out for them as
camping field and actually asked Nwude to reside at his house until their
orders had been fully supplied, but Nwude refused and opted to stay with his men
but eze Ikkena sold food and meat to them cheaply, and made sure that his
servants provided the visiting warriors with water day and night, they had
ordered for two thousand and five hundred horses, the surprised ndoki people did
not have that much horses at the moment, due to the last attack by the pink
skinned thieves(as they were commonly refered to) they had reduced the number
of horses they shipped to the lower nigers, but they assured the prince that his
horses would be ready within fifteen days, thus Nwude was obligated to wait for
fifteen days,he spent one thousand tupence daily on food and meat, the price of
the whole shipment of horses had been estimated at fifty one thousand
tupence, and he also had paid for new matchets and spears and bows and arrows
with abot ten thousand tupence,he was running low on finance and the wise Okike
kept looking at his soon to be new ruler and smiled,he had about ten thousand
tupence with him,in the case that the soon to be eze might need his help,he
would be glad to give it to him,and after fifteen days, they prepared to
leave, funny enough, with the new horses, the journey only lasted four days simply
because they rode slowly, the army was a fearfull sight on the way back, the
majestic looking nwude still had about eight thousand tupence on him when they
rode into town and the town stood still for him that day, every sight that
beheld the new security armada of prince Nwude trembled,it was obvious that
something was about to happen, all the towns along the way also made that
observation,it was obvious that Nwakaibeya was giving his son gradual control
of the ezumezu lands, people had fled into the bush on sighting the all horsed
army approach, and Nwude was adviced to always ride in the middle between two
strong formations of warriors as set by Ochiagha okike, thus making any
intentions of attack impossible to reach him,his horse had been dressed in a
sultanic fashion by the very Observant ndoki ( aboki people, name for hausa’s
people ) who could immediately estimate his value at a glance,he rode straight
to his fathers house and went in at once to report to his father while his
newly organised army who had already taken place as his constant security
clothing waited for him,the whole town whispered that night, none spoke aloud,it
was obvious that nwude was now in control, the Nze’s quickly had a call from Nze
Ugonna who had already been briefed by Nwude that he would like to see the
entire records of transaction sice the beginning of his fathers reign till
date, the nze had Nodded Obediently and asked for twenty four hours to put his
accounts in order,Nwude had ordered Nwokoike to lock-up the town,no Nze was
allowed to leave town until he had finished his session with each of them, every
compound was silent, there were no sound of singing children or mothers, everyone
was anxious, the Nze’s quickly met and was informed by nze Ohiagu that
Nwakaibeya had told him that he had given his full powers to nwude and anyone
who may want to see him as an impudent brat would only be doing so at his or
her own detriment, the Nze’s knew what that meant, the young man would want to be
in the know of all his father’s business’s,they all cautioned one another to be
carefull as the new security army would not hesitate to dael ruthlessly with
any one who dares their new lord Nwude,Ugonna made it clear that he was
prepared to give the same loyalty he had for nwakaibeya also to nwude but they
all feared that the young man may want to change his high council, thus each man
sought the advice of Nze ohiagu who was very close to Eze Nwakaibeya, that
night, each Nze,made his stand clear to Nze Ohiagu and asked him to relay to
prince Nwude through his father that they were and would still be loyal to
him, that night,Ohiagu paid a secret visit to Eze nwakaibeya who on hearing the
report was pleased and he called in Nwude and explained things to him and also
assured him that the Nze’s got the message and the presence and look of the new
army got the required results, nze Ohiagu calmed down the prince and assured him
of the perpetual loyalty of the Nze’s and infact,he assured him that by
tomorrow, they would all come individually to meet with him and give account of
their duties to Eze Nwakaibeya, the Nze later left after getting assured by
Nwude that all will be calm and well if he got the efficient accounts of
service that he required from the Nze’s,however as sson as they left, his father
told him to be strong and maintain his no nonsense stand but also to be
reasonable inhis actions,a slight step per walk, said the old man who was
satisfied at the way things were working out, while at the Nche lair,Nwokoike
gave his full might to Nwude and sealed up every exit and entrance to
ezumezu, the entire seven villages were individually locked up as ordered by
Nwude,he had instructed that the people be made to comprehend that something
was happening,no rash behaviour but no funny and uncontrolled movement for that
night, the warriors for the very first time patrolled in Umuezumezu, everybody
went to bed early and by dawn ,they all woke up with anticipations of bad news
only to learn that nothing had happened that night,no one knew the reason or
cause of the night’s tension, but it was very fearfull, but that morning, everyone
looked bright, the Nze’s came out looking happy and calm, all was well,Nze Ohiagu
had done his duty well, that week, prince Nwude used the nche lair which was very
big,one hundred and fifty portions of land,as his consult post and each nze
came to give account to him in the presence of the whole Ezumezu warriors
trainess and leaders alike,he looked regal and fearfull, captain smith and
Alexander who lived in the Nche lair as cleaners watched with awe at the
précised method with which the young native prince handled his affairs, they
begun to understand the native language a bit, they had now acquired a darker
skinn tan and shined matchets, shields and cut grasses or sweep the lair, they
repaired huts and ran errands in the lair, they had never been allowed to leav
the lair since the day they entered into the lair which was also the day they
arrived at the town, the trainees and warriors were kind to them,so far as they
did not try to escape or cause any havoc or disobey orders, they were well fed
and the famous general Ochawa whom they now respected was in the constant habit
of giving the one tupence each every five days, this they used in buying palm
wine, the trainees were often sent to buy them this delicious alchohol, and they
drank it at night when they went to bed in their stone hut which stood lonely
in a small walled compound in the middle of the lair, they were guarded day and
night by at least fifteen armed warriors who would laugh and play with them if
they behaved well but if they misbehaved as Alexander sometimes got homesick, they
got flogged, but now they were used to the natives and had begun to enjoy
themselves, funny enough, food had never been a problem, you just had to get used
to eating cassava or Djapu always with different kind of soup, meat was
constant, where it came from they didn’t know ( Nwakaibeya had placed a servant
to attend to their feeding, thus the servant was always given whatever he needed
to cook for the two men every morning, noon and night ) but what the two men
knew was that their food was more constant than their pay had been as a
mercenary!,they had once tried to be their friend wokike (Nwokoike) to help
them get a girl to ease their sexuall needs and Nwoko had made it clear that
sex was the only request they could never be granted, but meat, drink, snuff, even
smoking of the native harbal pot smoke was made available if they wanted as the
warriors saw them as funny creatures and tended to see it as a warrior
priviledge to bethe ones to see and tend to the new animals caught by Ochiagha
Okike, they were so over fed, they began to develop a little protrusion in the
belly,The prince would sometimes come to play a game of Ncho with them and
after wards give them a coin each which would feth a very big jar of palm wine
and some meat for the night, but yet still, they had never seen the town again
after the first day of their arrival, infact, the people forgot about them,Amobi
and Maduka were now trainess and it surprised to see that the Ochiagha did not
give them any special treatment,he simply hollered and bellowed to all as one
and the same, one month later,on a bright sunny after noon, prince Nwude was
sitting in his room resting when his chief security guard came and whispered to
him and he immediately walked to his father’s room and saw Nze Ohiagu seated
beside the peacefull looking sleeping old man and Ohiagu spoke and
said,Nwakaibeya is gone forever! Nwude stood still, the emotions welled up in
him but he managed to control it and turned said to his guard,go tell his
guards to do the run! He ordered and Nwude’s chief guard warrior,Alajemba, a
ruthless warrior and very feared in the town ran out and told the late
Nwakaibeya’a guard warriors to do the run at once, they all became silent, their
lord was dead! The run was a ritual performed to announce the passing away of a
ruler like Nwakaibeya, the guard warriors would go and take lumps of Alo isi
oma,(Lump Of good smell) a very expensive lumpy scent ointment made of
thickened oil lump and the smell wwas like fresh dewy tangerine, they put it on
small cuppy bowls and stuck the sharp end of this bowls into long poles and lit
the lup with fire, when you do this,it gives out a dreamy scenty smell which
takes a long time to fade away, once you perceive this scenty smell, the EZE was
dead!,the warriors were to run round the seven villages with this lit poles of
burning perfume, thus all would know that their Eze was dead!, Enyidiya and
Ochiagha Okike was sitting down relaxing with their one year old son and
chatting, four of their servants had now been admitted into the Nche and he had
replaced them with four new ones,as they sat and chatted, suddenly, the Ochiagha
stiffened and sniffed in the air a couple of times, and then helooked at the
roof and shook his head, chei,Oko osisi adala,(a mighty oak has fallen) he said
to himself and he immediately got up and said Enyioma! ( a pet name by which he
called his wife) do not leave the house,I will be back! He said and went to his
room, changed his clothes, took his matchet and walked out, mounted his horse and
rode away,Enyidiya knew what the smell meant,Eze Nwakaibeya was no more, the
crowd entered into the ovu where the corpse dressed Akwa-ugwu-eze was laid on a
metal bedding and after an hour of discussion Nze Ohiagu rose up and
said,Umuezumezu,it is our tradition to ensure that our Eze is on seat and in control
before we bid an older Eze farewell,I want all men to kneel on one knee and all
women to kneel on both knees in all Umuezumezu lands within the next ten
minutes as Onye Eze Nwude will be coming out to sit before as Onye Eze this day
and forever! Said the Nze and the crowd, indigenes, warriors ,merchants, ichies
and nze’s all knelt down and some few minutes later as the sun beat hard on the
perspiring crowd,Onye Eze nwude walked out of the inner chambers dressed in
lions skins on his arms and golden Akwa-ugwu-eze on his waist and chast and in
his right horn,a golden bull horn and in his left hand the Ezumezu blood
stained golden sword of judgement and besides him on his right hand side was
onye isi nche Nwokoike and on his left hand side was Ochiagha Okike and behind
him was Onye isi nche eze,Alajemba and as he came out and sat on the ancient
seat of judgement facing the ovu,the corpse and the crowd, everyone hailed at
once EKELE DIRI EZE NWUDE! And he raised high the bull horn and the golden
sword and the crowd all stood up and he signalled to somebody and they brought
his old mother and his sister before him and they both knelt down and his
mother removed the odinanma Eze bead and gave it to nwude and hailed Ekele diri
Eze Nwude, his sister also hailed him and at last he took a burning torch from a
warrior standing by with the torch and gave it to his mother and she took it
and went to the lying corpse in the sun and set it ablaze,as it burned, women
began to wail and they circled round their former ruler and led her indoors, the
corpse burned totally as warriors tended to it continuously and all the
while, the Nze’s and Ichie’s discussed the manner in which the great Nwakaibeya
had passed away,Nwokoike gave instructions to his Nche warriors, nothing goes or
comes into umuezumezu today,we mourn our father,he said to his second in
command Onye Nche Ofoneme who at once rode out with many warriors to seal up
the entire towns.
One week
after Eze Nwude became eze,Ochiagha Okike was returning from his forest
inspections when all of a sudden, his horse neighed furiously and stomped its
hoofs on the ground and halted and almost threw the Ochiagha aground,he was
surprised ttoo to see a very fair and pretty young woman of about twety five
years bent by a thicket in that part of the forests,as he saw her,,he
asked,Nne,what are you doing at this dangerous place at this hour? He asked and
she replied,ah,I just had to see for myself,so it is true?she said and the
Ochiagha said, what is true? Who are you? But instead of replying, she quickly
turned and went into the thicket and disappeared and after waiting for a
while, the Ochiagha came down from his horse and took out his matchet and went
into the thicket and searched everywhere for her with seeing a trace of her,he
was confused but he went back to his horse and rode away and never mentioned
the strange woman to anybody.as the years ran by,the towns people got used to
their new Eze,infact,he proved that he was equall to his reputation, the fist
five weeks after he becam Eze,he had summoned the high coucill and had made it
clear that the four women servants from Mbaeluelu were to be brought before the
coucill for a certain debate as wished for by his late father, thus the ladies
were immediately brought before him and he said, women,my father before he died
made it clear that you and your children were indigenes of Umuezumezu and you
and your children were also servants to the Eze of Umuezumezu, and he bade me to
give you lands to farm and live upon and be henceforth known as land owners, this
is to deter future would be antagonists and ignorant people who had no wisdom
at all, here to fore, state you before this council if you have need for a land
and if you have been saving towards it and how much you have thus each saved,he
said and Ogadinma who knew what her nwude was going to do spoke up,Onye Eze,may
you live long in prosperity,I so much want to be a land owner for the sake of
my sons that I have starved and have been able to save upto eight hundred
tupence! She said and Nwude said,go and get it quickly! He said and she bowed
and ran out and Uloma spoke and said,Onye eze,I have also saved up to seven
hundred and forty tupence! And Nwude said,go and get it! And Olanma said,Onye
eze, I have been able to save nine hundred tupence! And eze Nwude said,go and
get it! And she too ran out joyfully and Adaku said, onye eze,I also have six
hundred tupence! And Nwude said,go and get it and she too ran out and before
they returned,he turned to nze Ungoona and said,Nze,when they come, collect the
money they have, calculate the remaining balance and tell me sothat I will pay
it to you today ,myself,my father made me do this, infact there is still one
more errand to run for him,but that will be done by okike! As they
discussed, the women returned and knelt before Eze Nwude and he instructed
them to pass the etani’s to Nze ugonna and they did and then he told Nze Ohiagu
and Nze Okoro to go and mark out a portion of land each for the women and give
them the ownership akwande receipt today, and he turned to the women and
said, you were my father’s servants and he was pleased with your services and
also you have sons and daughters who are pure blood Umuezumezu children, thus
farm, work and eat of your lands, for even I was well served by you! Go in peace!
He said and the women bowed and thanked him and shouted in joy, they!
Landowners! In umuezumezu!.
Hey my
sister, look at us,landowners, see this piece of cloth with funny markings on
it,(scroll piece receipt) my father once had the same type at home when I was
at Mbaeluelu, hey I cannot believe this, said Uloma and Ogadinma said, hey, echiche
din ma oo,imellaa ooo! So my Nwude is really the great king they say he is!
Look at him seated on his big throne and all the Nze’s could no longer speak
before him, chei, I am now very sure of my place in this lands forever,my
sisters,we are in luck, nwude would never allow any harm to befall us,see that
jealous nze Okoro’s look as he was a-portioning the lands to us,he looked as if
he would ckoke to death! She said and they all giggled and Olanma said, yes,I
was surprised, and the Ochiagha Okike had also been very kind since his
marriage, after each harvest,he would send over at least fifty tubers of yams
and gifts of ten tupence to me,even though he no longer came to my bed,ah
Umuezumezu men are wonderfull people! Said the happy new land owner and they
chatted away happily.
Okike,You
will leave for ala)Elugwu at Once with twenty five thousand warriors,I have
estimated at least nine hundred thousand tupence for their new horses and new
weapons, also I will give you and extra one hundred fifty thousand tupence for
your feeding, but you will leave with five thousand bullwagons of yam and
ingredients and at least two thousand goats,be fast, make the purchases and
return here within twenty five days,is that clear? He said and Ochiagha Okike
nodded and the eze took him inside and gave him the twelve bags of etani and
said, there is supposed to be an extra fifty thousand in there for
emergencies, you will give me a full account on your return from the purchase, you
may leave, the onye ozi obodo has already left to clear the roads,so you leave
before dawn, said the eze as Ochiagha Okike left.
Four
days later,The marching warriors passed through Uhurhun town and continued
towards Imo,The Ochiagha had decided to make the purchases at Ala-imo,it was
said that the Ndoki merchants now favoured Ala-imo for large purchases, and
thus by the seventh day, they arrived at Ala-imo,it was a fearfull sight, twenty
five thousand armed warriors, had it not been for the dutifull errands of the
Onye Ozi obodo, they would have assumed the worst of the Ezumezu warriors, they
placed their orders with the great Ndoki merchants and it took ten days for
their purchases to be completely supplied and each horse was carefully
examined, horses trained for action, combat and confrontations, the Ochiagha was
satisfied and they left Ala-imo on the eleventh day of their arrival to imo and
on the fifth day of their departure from imo, they arrived Umuezumezu and rode
straight to the Nche lair which had been doubly expanded, smith and Alexander
couldn’t make any sense out of it all, they knew that there had been a change of
government but whoever was boss was no fool, the massive increase of military
weapons and mobility power was evident enough that the new boss was a battle
ready man,the new horses were well tended to and smith and Alexander got
jobs, cleaning and bathing the horses, they were given a tupence coin each every
two days, where the etani came from, they didn’t know and didn’t bother to ask
but they now began to save and could actually afford to send for new cloths and
sandals after two months of their job but they were still nallowed to step out
of the lair but comfortable, they were.
Eze
Nwude was delighted when after one year of his reign as eze of Umuezumezu,Onye
Isi Nche Nwokoike came forward to ask for his sister,Adaeze as his
bride, infact,Eze Nwude, threw a big feast for all in Umuezumezu, and Onye
Isi-nche Nwokoike made sure that he was not totally outdone by his friend,Eze
Nwude,The Onye Isi Nche Slaughtered ten bulls and forty goats and brought out
five thousand tubers of yams for the feast to prove that he was equall to the
task of feeding and taking the Eze’s sister as bride,Ezumezu was agog with the
vibrations of the marriage even after one year, many could still taste the
luscious feast of the marriage many months afterwards,Nche members and
ochiagha’s from many lands came for the event,Nwokoike was a very powerfull
warrior and all acknowledged the fact that he was qualified to succeed Ochiagha
Okike,Adaeze was all smiles and happy at the event and after the event,Eze
Nwude who had also slaughtered ten bulls and a hundred goats and also fed the
feasters with twelve thousand tubers of yams, gave the new couplefive new
horses, ten great bulls, fifty goats and five thousand tubers of yams and an
etani gift of ten thousand tupence to his sister. The feast lasted for three
days and three nights, the lands around shook, even the latest of late comers ate
beyond belief and carted home meat tied in big plantain leafs, some even made
away with plates or bull horns used as palm wine cups, infact, some youths even
fought over a loot of twenty tubers of yams which they had managed to smuggle
out of the feasting cooking ground, they were the butchers emplyed to slaughter
and clean and cut the meat and there was so many bulls,so many goats that they
even hid a goat and later fought over the goat and a loot of twenty tubers of
yams at the end of the feast, the town was filled to the brim with visitors and
well wishers,Onye isi-nche Nwokoike bought the ezinne and ezinna beads which he
gave to Eze Nwude and his mother and he gave the Eze an Ichie title cap,fan and
neck beads and a gift of an expensive sword bought from the Ndoki people for
the price of one thousand tupence,it was a beautifully carved sword, with
curvings at the tip and it was coloured red,Infact, many wished to have a look
at the red coloured metal,it was very rare.
My
lord,I just got a message from general Theophilus Pappilon of Greece ! Said
the soldier to General Polonus and the general turned and said, yes what did he
say? He asked,it had been three years since he returned from the dark coloured
continent and he was still very bitter, though he had been quite busy selecting
his new armada which was filled with dark skinned gladiators, white thieves and
murderers, the worst type! And every evil doer he could lay his hands
upon, infact, all the cut-throats in entire rome and beyond was signed into the
new army, every pirate of the high seas were sought for and employed, and the
gang was as it was supposed to be,they stole from coins to even grains of
millet, they were ready for what polonus wanted them for,now he was busy trying
to make soldiers out of the rowdy gang, which wasn’t an easy feat at all, though
they were all good fighters and warriors but you just couldn’t get them to have
a formation or anything resembling an organised military way of doing
things, each man was a lone killer and good at what he does but together, they
stank as an army and hard at taking orders, but recently, they were beginning to
behave themselves and Polonus was beginning to have hopes of getting them ready
within the remaining short two years. My lord, here is a scroll letter for you
from the greek General theophilus Pappilon! said the messenger as he handed a
scroll to Polonus who took it and rolled it down and shook his head, the letter
read thus!
Greeting Polonus, I hear that you are preparing to return to the
dark continent and to the great rivers Ochanja, I too will like to partake in
this return as I cannot allow you alone to have all that great and gold and
diamond rich valuable property to yourself, be prepared to set sail with
my thirty galleons which will have one hundred trained soldiers aboard,I
hope that we will meet at the lumineual islands of spain where my galleons will
wait for you for three months, holla my friend, General Stefan of france has
decided not to return with us,he says that his king will not fight against
educated people, but it seems as if they are onto something bigger than the
ochanja rivers property,( the funny scribblings of the natives may have scared
them off too ) however,I will wait for you at the lumineual Islands of spain in
two years as agreed,
Your friend
General Theophilu Pappilon of the Army Of Greece
As
General Polonus finished the letter,he hissed,he knew that Theophilus would
rather die than leave the dark continents alone, but like seasar had said,it
would be beter to share with Theophilus than to loose to the Bushmen again,he
folede the scroll and put it aside,he will meet Pappilon at the Lumineuals at
the appointed time, he had a very hard army of two hundred thousand men and
over fifty Galleons, this time, educated or not, they had to get rid of the
pestersome bushmen or be disgraced forever,he tought as he walked out to the
training grounds where his rowdy army which was now taking a military shape was
training.
Ochiagha
Okike was taking his forests inspections again when he stopped near the thicket
as he remembered the strange woman he had seen ther once some years ago,he had
not seen her again in the entire Umuezumezu or the neighbouring towns,no one
knew who she was and each time he passed by that thicket,he would remember
her,as he stopped his horse and stared at the thicket for about two minutes, suddelly, the
bushes rustled and she stepped out of the thickets, much to the surprise of the
Ochiagha who quickly descended from his horse and unsheated his matchet and
said menacingly,Who are you? And where do you always come from? And how do you
always enter Umuezumezu? He asked and she smiled and said,ah my handsome
warrior,do not be scared,my name is Adauwa, I am a person that loves famous
people and since I heard about you,I have always wanted to meet you and speak
to you! She said and the Ochiagha took a step forward and said, how do you enter
Umuezumezu and where do you come from,he asked and she said,I always enter
ezumezu from there§ she said pointing at the thicket and she spoke again and
said, but I am from Obi-uwa! And the Ochiagha spoke,Obiuwa? Where is that? Or
are you trying to be funny? He asked and she laughed and went quickly back into
the thicket and the Ochiagha immediately chased after her and dove into the
thicket and came out on the opposite side which turned out to be a great river
bank with adauwa standing close to the shores and he looked back and there was
no thickets and he was surprised and confused and he went to her and
said, sister, who are you? He asked more politely now,his matchet hanging by his
side and she said, but I told you,I am Adauwa, daughter of the world! And the
Ochiagha got angry and said, there is no river of this size in the entire
Umuezumezu or towns of five days march around for that matter,so where are we
and how do I go home, answer me now before I loose my temper,he said and she
laughed and said,if you loose your temper, you may never go home again, however,I
am not your enemy but a friend, come, let me show you something, she said and went
behind a big rock at the shores of the river and the Ochiagha followed her and as
he went behind the rock he saw some rustling leaves and went into it to meet
adauwa and came out in another strange place and he could not recognise the
place and when he looked at the thickets again,it turned out to be the tips of
a big forest,he went to Adauwa who was seated on a fallen tree lump and said
,adauwa, where am I and where was that river we just left,he asked and she
smiled and said,ah,that was the Imo river and now,you are in Obiuwa, come with
me,she said and the Ochiagha who had no choice followed her and they walked for
some minutes and as they walked, they would pass villagers either returning from
their farms or going about their businesses, they all knew Adauwa and knelt when
they got to her,and as they got to a big stone compound, she walked into the
compound with OchiaghaOkike who saw a very neat and beautifull surroundings and
there were warriors and servants of all types, male and female, they all knelt on
seing her and she took him into the Ovu and asked her servants to bring
meat, food and palm-wine,which was brought and she persuaded the Ochiagha to eat
and he ate but he was still apprehensive, afterwards, she said,my warrior, come
let me take you home, lest your wife begins to wonder where you are,she said and
instead of walking out of the compound, she took him to a small bush behind the
houses and as she waded into the bush,he went after her and came out at that
thicket where his horse was still faithfully waiting for its rider,as he got to
his horse,he turned and said to her,Adauwa,I don’t know who or what you are but
you say that you are friend and means us no harm and I believe you, will I see
you again? He asked and she smiled and said, sure,we will meet again but only
when I want us to,farewell my handsome warrior! She said and went back into the
thicket, the Ochiagha knew that it wasuseless to go searching for her,he mounted
his horse and gently rode home to his wife.
Eze
Nwakaibeya married The first daughter of Nze Ohiagu on the second year of his
reign and she was crowned the new Odinanma Onye Eze,( The Eze’s Delight) and
consequently, the leader of all the women of Umuezumezu,Nze Ohiagu’s joy knew no
bounds, finally he was like the late Nze Nwokorie, father to the former Odinanma
Onye Eze,he Ohiagu was now above every evil plottings of anyone in the lands
and as father to an Odinanma eze,he was feared in all the town’s around,he
could do and undo,he was made an ichie that same day and the Onye Eze gave him
a gift of five new horses directly bought at Ala imo and also allotted to the
new nze na Ichie Ohiagu ten Guard warriors for his security and paid for from
the Eze’s purse, However, that same week he retired from active service as a
high council member as was the custom and a new nze was installed in UmuEzumezu
by name of Mazi Uchenna,a retired Onye nche who was immediately drafted into
the high council as a representative of the Eze’s Financial office to the high
council and the new head of the high became Nze Ugonna who was followed by Nze
Okoro and Nze Nnabuihe, the High council functioned normally and all was fine as
the towns continued in their dreamlike existence, now after the marriage,Eze
Nwude always took a day off every ten days to stroll with his new bride, they
would be accompanied by the di Nche Eze led by Onye isi Nche Eze Alajemba, two
thousand warriors moved with the Eze any time he takes a stroll and he normally
only went to the Nche lair to sit and chat with Smith and Alexander who on
hearing all the warriors hail the Eze whenever he came around, Ekele Diri Eze
Nwude, they would boom in their loud militant voice and smith and Alexander
would hurry to to see the prince turned king and would bow and say in their
newly acquired igbo language, eykeley diri Eze Nwudey and the Eze would laugh
and pat their backs with his fan,the warriors would bring a seat and the eze
and his bride would seat and the eze would tel them to get a seat for the two
pinks skinned prisoners and they would sit and chat for many hours,So Simiti
tell me,is your land as great as mine? He would ask and captain smith would
smile mischieviously and replied,ah onye eze, your land is incomparably
beautifull, why do you think we came to take it? He would joke and the Eze and
his bride, including the warriors would laug loudly and Eze Nwude would ask
again,so tell me,is your place very far away by land? And Alexander would
reply, hey Onye eze,you cannot get to our land by foot or horse riding, you have
to sail on the seas for many months before you get there, he said and the
ignorant warriors would nod in seeming comprehension,so tell me,would you like
t go back if I set you free? He asked Smith would reply,Onye Eze,every man
would like to go back to his land someday but,Ezumezu is such a beautifull
place filled with beautifull people that I may be tempted to come back
again, said smith truthfully as he smiled mischeviously,if he was let loose,he
would go and get a bigger army and come back to take what he wants, his british
lord and families would pay handsomely for this beutifull property,he tought
mischeviously and thus they would talk, joke and laugh the day away,it was
soothing way to relax for Eze Nwude who had no intentions of letting the
prisoners go,feed them,he will but he knew that even if he let them go,within
twenty four hours on the roads out of the one hundred and seven towns, they
would be captured and killed as many still hurt from the attack of the pink
skinned thieves,Smith and Alexander knew that too, they knew that Ezumezu was
the safest place they could be and they were gratefull, infact, they always saw
the trainee warriors learning the strange alphabets and numbers and were
interested but the smart warriors and their leaders would not let them near the
tutorial areas or even have a look at the scrolls, thus they did not learn the
writings of the dark coloured people but by the fourth year, they could fluently
speak the language and Eze Nwude had began to give them tiny glimpses of the
villages and towns,he would send his warriors to give cloths to the prisoners
with instructionto have their baths and get cleaned up and come to the Ovu for
a game of nchor, this they performed once every month.
Ochiagha
Okike was one day riding down from one of his inspections, this was during the
fourth year of the great war of the pink skinned thieves and he passed by the
thicket,he had hoped to see adauwa every time he passed the place for over two
years and he had never seen her again and he had forgotten all about her but as
he rode past the place he heard a voice say,ha Okike, you have forgotten all
about me! And the Ochiagha stopped and turned around and saw Adauwa standing
near the thick thicket and he said,ah Adauwa,I do not need to ask how you got
hear,so how are you? He asked and she laughed and said, fine,I missed you but I
had to calculate my timing,it must rhyme with the events in-store,she said and
the Ochiagha asked, what events? And she replied,oh never mind, you will not need
an answer for that, any way will you come with me,I want to take you some where!
She stated and the Ochiagha smiled and said,ah Adauwa,I don’t want to walk into
your trap so that you can take me to a place where I’ll never be able to
return,no way,I am not going and Adauwa laughed and said, why are like
this, unbelieving,I have no intention to hurt you, just to be your friend, she
said and Ochiagha Okike got down from his horse and followed her into the
thicket and came out at a great river shore and he quickly recognised the great
river Ochanja, and she sstood at the shores as the flowing river tapped her
feet and she said, listen Okike,I like you and one thing that gets to me most is
fame, yes if any man seeks for fame, that man will meet me along the paths of
their fame for I am fame itself,do you comprehend? She said seriously and the
confused Ochiagha nodded and she laughed and said,oh,don’t worry, you have met me
and thus you have met fame, come let me show you what I mean! She said and took
his hand and walked back into the bush that they had come out from and they
emerged outside another forest and saw a tarred express road,Ochiagha Okike had
never seen uch a road before in his entire life and as they stood a car swiftly
drove past leaving trails of dust behind and the Ochiagha almost ran back into
the bush,he didn’t know what that beastly and fast creature was and he didn’t
want to wait to find out Adauwa’s smile re-assured him and he stood looking at
the strange environment for long as Adauwa waved down a taxi and they stepped
into an airconditioned taxi, the air condition felt good after hot afternnon sun
and as incredible as it may seem, there was a man in front holding onto a
wheel-like thing at the front of the strange contraption and their was soft
music playing somewhere from inside the thing they were in,ochiagha Okike had
never seen anything like it,he stared at everything and everyone they
passed,cars,trucks,storey buildings,skyscrapers,infact,he was lost,that was for
sure but he clung unto adauwa like an infant will cling to its mother in a
strange market place, and as they descended from the taxi, she took some pieces
of funny looking material (paper money) and gave it to the man in front of the
fast moving contraption and the thing moved away with the man in it,she took
him to a roadside eatery where she ordered for some coca-cola nd some other
sweet things which she made himl drink and eat and he did, every thing was
sweet, the people looked funny in strange cloths that either covered all their
body or covered nothing at all and some wore some things on their eyes, thick
things, some spoke to some small box-like things which they held to their
ears, many came with some small boxes and posed in front of him and Adauwa and
flashed them with some kind of strange light, people gathered round them and
spoke a strange and incomprehensible language,a man, holding a strange material
(writing pad and pen) came and spoke to adauwa and she replied in the strange
language for a litlle while and the man pointed at the ociagha’s matchet and
she spoke again rapidly in the strange language, ( the man a Nippcos ) officer
had come to see the reason for the commotion at the eatery along the swedini
junction and had seen a man in a funny dressing style that showed his bare
chests and thighs and also the man had a matchet hanging from his hips
and in a sheave, the lady too was dressed in a funny style but she explained the
she was an actress and the man was an actor, they were having a rehearsal
somewhere down the road and had come to have some snacks, the officer probably
satified with the answer walked away) and after a while, the people with the
flashing boxes ( photographers and journalists) went away and she took his hand
and they went to a communal garden she told him to lie dow and she did so with
him and after some minutes of chatting, she took him to a thicket in the garden
and they passed through and came out behind adauwa’s house in Obiuwa, ah a more
understable surrounding, tought the Ochiagha as he sat down to a meal of pounded
Yam and goat meat peppersoup and afterwards, she took him into her bedroom and
began to play with him like a woman In need and after a while, the two were satiated
and she bathed with him and later took him back to the thicket and
said,Okike,we will not meet again like this but I will see you again in a
better place, your time is come,so go and farewell, she said as he went into the
thicket and came out to see his horse, satisfied that he was home,he rode to his
house.
Ogun who
had been gratefull to the wete Etani people was sitting in front of his house
when one of his relatives name Osunbiyi ran In and said,Ogun, there is a
problem,he said and ogun sat up and said,Biyi,Kilode oo! He asked and the young
man spoke, they are back, the pink people, this time, with bigger weapons and many
many big ships, and their numbers, like the sands of the sea, already, they have
destroyed eti-osa and Ilu-Ajah and is on their way to ile –remo, they might
arrive here within two weeks, their speed and numbers is consuming and nothing
can stop them and their thunder sticks! Said the Agitated young man,Ogun wasted
no time,he told the young man to go and bring his wife and children with twenty
minutes,he too ran inside and told his family to prepare to leave tow at
once, that day,by nightfall, ogun and his cousin and their wives and six children
took to flight and within five days, they had arrived Ochanja where he sounded
the warning to the Ochanja people before he continued to Enugu,to his friend
Ojimba, and three days later,he was in Enugu telling the people of the retrun of
the pink skinned thieves, the Eze Of Enugu Dispatched messengers to the one
hundred and seven Towns and Eze’s of the Lower niger to forewarn them of
Impending danger and to ask for help, within five days, the news got to
UmuEzumezu and the warriors began massively to prepare for their defnse, eze
Nwude after consultations with his warriors, decided to shift the women and
children backwards to Umuoleke, the Eze’s of the lands around Ezumezu met and
consulted on what to do,soon fleeing Oroba People and Ochanja people began to
arrive at umuezumezu, the Thieves had wiped Out Oroba land and were moving at a
desperate speed, they were ferocious and dangerous, the ezumezu warriors began to
be wicked to smith and Alexander, the whisper of war and the influx of fleeing
people confirmed their worst fears,Alexander wanted to commit suicide, why
now,he knew that it may happen,Polonus would never accept defeat from this
reatures but Alexander had come to see them as people and not animals and it
pained him to have ever tought like polonus, yes he knew who it was,GENERAL
ARGONUS POLONUS OF THE GREAT ROMAN ARMY WAS BACK!
Yes,Polonus
was back and with him was none other than General Theophilus Pappilon of the
greek army, together, this men moved like a consuming fire,Warfield professionals
with ferocious cut-throats and gladiators and prisoners and pirates all
promised lands and slaves and they tore down and destroyed everything in their
paths, the information brought by fleeing people made it clear that this was a
greater challenge than the first one,the eze’s of
Umuoleke,umuezumeu,ahiafor,al-imo,Uhunrhun,egbelubi,umule and many others met
and quickly decided to contribute twenty five thousand warriors and before the
end of four days, they had overone hundred and seventy five warriors but news
had it the sea of armies brought by the pink skinned thieves was more than
that,Okike sent emmisaries to all the eze’s of the one hundred and seven towns
nand lands and they donated the same number of warriors each, and before the end
of six days the entire lands was crawling with warriors, over a million of
them, and they spead eagled into five units, each unit around two hundred and
fifty thousand men,the first unit swarmeds through to ala-imo,led by Ochiagha
Ojiofor of ala-imo,the second unit passed through Mbaitolu, led by Ochiagha
Nwazuo, the third factor led by Ochiagha Okike marched straight through egbelubi
and ontowards Ochanja and the fourth Unit led by Ochiagha Ibeneme of Ihieala
and they passed through ala-awgu and ontowards ala-elugwu and the fifth batch
led by Ochiagha Ohiagu went backwards to Okpuala to cover the rear and protect
the lands and all the eze’s from Ochanja,Elugwu and forwards, retreated
backwards to Okpuala via Umuoleke, the entire shores of the great river from
Ochanja to Imo became desolately empty and their forests and jungles was
crawling with warriors lying in wait for the thieves, the fleeing Oroba’s continued
to troop towards a now empty Ezumezu, all the Eze’s had gone backwards to
Okpuala which was ow over crowded but this ez’s still had so much
warriors and their Ndi-Isi Nche’s that it was obvious that if the pinks thieves
managed to defeat the Ochiagha’s and their men, they would have a lot to contend
with if they came against the ndi isi nche’s ,Nwokoike built a military wall
around the ezumezu people’s camp site lands, food was not in shortage, the people
had carted as much food as they can in many thousands of bull wagons, the only
problem was water,in a short while, the strain showed on Okuala streams, smith
and Alexander shivered with the military mights being displayed by the natives
and the level of co-ordination was amazing, however,Eze Nwakaibeya had to beg
the eze’s of other lands to restrain their people from invading the ezumezu
camp to kill smith and Alexander, the hatred for them was un-imaginable,they
stayed hidden in a hut in the ezumezu camp being fed by unwilling ezumezu
warriors who would rather slaughter them and have it done with,Nwokoike and
other isi Nche men fortified Okpualar so much that you had to speak Ngwa or
Ifedi as the Ochaja igbo accent was called, infact Ogun was situated at the main
fort gates to identify real oroba people and their accents,he was vouched for
by the elugwu people, afterall,he it was that brought the first news into
ala-igbo,
Thirty
days afterwards,Polonus landed at the lower nigerseverything in his path had
been consumed,he camped at the opposite lands of the Ochanja rivers known as
Nbele, and remade his plans while Pappilon sailed north wards of the lower
nigers towards ala-imo and mbaitolu, however, the native warrior scouts had
already seen them and passed back signals to their commanders in the very thick
parts of the forests and jungles, okike sent back informations to Ojiofor and
Nwazuo who also sent messages to the remaining commanders, during the last five
years, smith and Alexander had trained the Ezumezu warriors on how to use the
thunder sticks they had captured from the first pink wars, thus three days after
the arrival of Polonus at ebele, they suddenly croosed the river Ochanja by
night, knowing that the natives must have discovered their presence and fled or
set ambush but, they too had plans,Pappilonwas to drop off ten thousand men evry
ten kilometres of the sailing journey to mbaitolu, this were to come from the
rear of the Ochanja and Imo people and cut off any ambushers from the main
units far back in their native dens,Polonus knew that if he captured Ochanja
and imo and The Lands along the shores of the great rivers,he would establish
base and build a city like fort and cut off the inner people from their trades
and will then commence to take them one after the other,Ochagha Okike knew that
whatever happened,Ochaja must not fall, the visitors most not be allowed to root
or it will become impossible to uproot them,as his scouts came to inform them
that Polonus had crossed into the shores of Ochanja,Ochiagha Okike signalled to
Ochiagha Oforma and he took his position at once and crossed the eastern side
of the Ochanja with forty thousand warriors,it was like a chess, game, they
planned to block off Polonus from any form of re-enforcements and also be able
to press forward to ascertain the actuall strengths of the visitors, thus scouts
would be sent backwards and forwards,as Polonus and his army of over one
hundred thousand soldiers stepped into Ochanja, the rest were billeted in
different conquered Oroba villages along the way to the high seas far beyond
the oroba lands, that same night as they entered into first Ochanja village, they
walked into a hail of gun fire as the first set of Ezumezu warriors opened fire
on them,Polonus was surprised, where did they get the guns? Ah,smith was still
alive then! The natives must have learnt with the captured weapons of smith and
his men,Polonus’s men, returned fire for fire, they anouvered to another area of
the town, and crouched towards the area of the attacking fire arms and when they
where well position, they launched attacks with canons, the sounds of those
things scared the native warriors beyond belief, this was worse than thunder
sticks, polonus let them know that he was not smith,he bombed that area of the
bushes until it became silent and as the silence grew his soldiers rushed into
the forests and met with native style deaths that they had-nt expected, the
natives had come to understand ,that thunder stick warfare was of the pink
men, thus they stopedd and lied in wait knowing that the visitors would assume
that they had fled their point, actually, the canons did cause a lot of havoc in
the jungles, but the natives stood their ground and the first batch sent into
the jungles by polonus was quickly and quietly silenced, thenative way,the
trees, simply swalloed them up,the natives would rise from slittle graves dug in
the forest, cut the throat of any stray pink man and go back into
position, soon, gunfire opened on polonus from the western side of the Ochanja
town and he retaliated with heavy canon fire, thinking that the natives must
have fled their earlier position and repositioned themselves in the western
side, thus,he signalled to five unit leaders and told them to ensure that the
vacated forest regions was never reoccupied and he now concentrated the fire
powers on the western side and within an hour, there was silence again, and he
signalled for three thousand men to comb the bushes for any lives and they
walked into a rainstorm of arrows, there were shouts and cries as soldiers fell
either dead or wounded and polonus knew that if he retreated now,he will never
have ochanja again, that was certain,so he sent one of his pirate captains and
four sail boats to go round through the Eastern sectors of the ochanja
and into the streams between Ochanja and elugwu,he intended to take Ochanja
from behind tonight and also press forward into elugwu as well,Ochiagha okike
sent messengers to Ochiagha Ibeneme in the forests and mountains of elugwu, to
watch his watersides, and soon, gunshots and canons were heard behind Ochanja and
ala-elugwu,the pirates had landed!,Ibeneme, flooded the pirates with warriors
and they had a face to face confrontation that lasted for two hours, the
pirates ran aground and retreated into the mountains where they met another sea
of warriors, they did not know the numbers of the natives and they met with pain
full deaths, and before dawn,,Ibeneme wiped them Out!,they captured the four
sail boats laden with weapons and canons, and loots from ala oroba, but in
Ala-imo that morning, the huge greek galleons came into the horizons and as it drew
nearer, the native warriors waited for the sailors to land and walk into the
quickest death that they could have, they had never heard of canons but at
hundred meters away from land,Pappilon opened canon fire on the warriors who at
once knew terror, the lands exploded and the treesand bushes were torn to
shreds, the buildings and huts and houses were crumbling like corn meal cakes,it
was a fearfull sight, pappilon shelled the lands of Imo for two hours and made
sure that the coasts was clear before he sent in the first waves into the
towns, they had an easy entry as the native warriors had retreated greatly, and
had to wait for so many hours to make sure that the great thunder destroyer
thing was silent before they began to crawl back to place but by then,Pappilon
had landed completely and already established canon forts in the town, thus the
natives ruled the forests and jungles and the greek armada was in control of
the ala-Imo town. Ochiagha Okike was already ready to attck the brief base
being set up by General Polonus when a scout who had been sent by Ochiagha
Oforma to say that the other side of the Ochanja rivers was lightly guarded and
if he pressed forward,he might knock off the brief outposts stationed by the
pink general,Oforma asked for the order of the next moves,he was ready to hit
at them, even unto the oroba lands, but Okike instructed that he be patient and
maintain his blockade, nothing and no one comes across the ochanja and as for
pressing forward, they would do that together as soon as they succeed in
flushing the white general out of Ochanja, however in the land of Ala-imo,it was
another story altogether,General pappilon did not want the natives to believe
that he wanted to build a fort in that river shores town, thus by evening,he
prepared to move forward till down and he was heavily loaded with canons,as
much as close to five hundred shells was prepared for the sole purpose of
driving the natives as far away as possible and in that he succeeded, that Even
by sundown,he opened fire towards the eastern regions of the forests paths that
cuts through ala-imo to Umule and as they fired, they built a round mobile
military fort, supporting the shells with gunfire into the forests and as they
fired, they huge military circle began to press forward, trampling every blade of
grass in its paths, they fired at a circular radius of a hundred meters around
them, thus beating the lights out of the ambushing natives who fled at the
massive salvo of the attcks from Pappilon,he had also left a batch of soldiers
and gunners in his ships to keep the town unoccupied whilst he was away, the
native warriors could not believe it but nothing and no one could stand in the
way of the greek general and by dawn,he was almost upon umule,,yet tirelessly
they pushed forward and would stop for resting at five hours intervals,he knew
that within forty eight hours,he would enter the next native town, they never
met any challenges and they had never had it so easy and as for the native
warriors led by Ochiagha Ochiagha Ojiofor, they were killed like dogs in large
quantities, they sent scount messengers back to Okpuala to inform them of the
recent development and also sent scouts to Elugwu to say that they were being
beaten silly by Pappilon, the pink skinned thief general, the information got to
the Eze’s at Okpuala and they were all disheartened and after due
consultation, they called smith and Alexander and they went to see the Eze’s who
had convened to seek for solution,
Onye
Eze,Ekele diri gi,said smith and Alexander, much to the chagrin of warriors from
other lands but Alajemba’s men stood firmly near the two pink men and made it
clear that the two pinks were their property, and one Eze asked,Enyia,Nghirin la
unu ndi cho ebeke anyi? ( friend, what really are you people looking for in our
lands?) and Smith replied,Onye Eze,Nothing in particular, our people are
warriors and we live by conquering and taking what we want,we don’t explain
ourselves to any body,we see lands as properties that should belong only to the
strong, said smith firmly and Nwude replied,Simiti, let us be serious, you are now
amongst us and knows our ways and weakness is not an attribute that we can be
attributed by,so tell me,what do we do about the recent problems?he asked and
smith replied, what problems, onye eze? And Eze nwude asked the scout to tell
smith the message he brought back from the war front and he was told and Smith
smiled and said,Onye eze, that style can only belong to one man,General
pappilon,he is what our people will call a typhoon,a sand storm and that method
is very effective however,to counter it will be very expensive! He said and the
Eze’s all paid attention and eze Nwude said, please tell me and smith
replied,Onye eze,if I tell you, then I have betrayed my people and they may be
here to save me and if they still later win,I will have become a traitor but if
they loose, then I will be justified in having told you,I am a soldier and I
know when to hold my peace, now hear this,I will tell you all you need to know
in return for a favour! He said and Nwude asked, what is this favour, all around
paid attention and smith replied,Onye eze,In the presence of my friend,I betray
my people,so if I tell you, then when they press near this fort, please have me
executed and let Alexander be retrieved by them,is that fair? He asked and
Nwude said, let it be done for you as you wish now speak, how do we face this
typhoon? He asked and smith said, you will have to re-enforce the dying units
with at least three hundred thousand me,what Pappilon is using is known as
canons, they are mass destroyer weapons and for your kind of warriors, they will
be wiped out in no time and at no price to pappilon,if you can re-enforce
them, tell them to cut themselves into three units and face pappilon from the
right, left and front sides, leaving his rear open, his type of attack consumes
much energy as it is a method for rapid advancement, thus they have to study
their resting habits and when they know when to storm, let them attck from this
three sides and surely,Pappilon will open fire at once, but if your warriors
press it,they will break through the canon walls and enter the fort, let them be
suicidal about it,if not, even this place will be dead before pappilon gets
here,as they storm the fort, cutting down everone in sight, the gunmen will
always have to reload their guns and will thus be no matches for your matchet
men,and if they hit hard enough,Pappilon will afll back the way he had
come, gunning his canons forwards to discourage any one from pursuing him, tell
them not to block his exit,if they do,he will simply fight like a wounded lion
and will not retreat but will keep moving forwardsand this time without
stepping until they have quitened your men,do you understand, once you do
this,he will know what the open backway is for and he will use it knowing that
you are not ignorant of his tactics! Said the tired Smith and Nwude said to the
messenger,do you understand? He asked and the man nodded and he turned to the
Eze’s and asked,Ndi eze,do we give three hundred thousand warriors to Ojiofor?
He asked they all nodded,it was nothing, they have that ten times over, but with
what smith was saying about the canons, the numbers will only be effective if
used wisely and knowledgeably, thus, they instructed that three hundred thousand
more warriors be prepared to move with forty eight hours.
Ochiagha
Ibeneme got the message about the massacre of their people back at alaimo and
he sent a message to Ochiagha Okike that he was falling back to go and help
Ojiofor but he got a firm response from Okike,Stay put and maintain
stance, there was enough men back at the Okpualar fort to strengthen
Ojiofor, they had to seek for solution to Polonus who wasn’t an easy kill either
,yes, truthfully speaking,Polonus had kept them Occupied, they had even tried the
hit and run method with which they had beaten smith but had turned out
furtile, the natives would rush out in large quantities and attack the small
forts set up by Polonus at the river banks and then run quickly back into the
bush, they did it severall times but instead of budging ,Polonus who had seen it
all before, decided to give them a dose of their own medicine,he created a
diversion to one end of the forests by sending two thousand gunners into the
forest tips to fire at the bushes nearby, whilst from the left flank, his men
began to shell that area too whilst the third party lied close to the right
area of the forest s and as soon as the left flank shellig receeded, they opened
gunfire at the right side knowing that their rea was now open and as they
expected, the natives took the rear attack and hit at the visitors, who used the
opportunity to quickly sneak into the bushes in their rear, cutting off the new
attck wave and they sliced their facing style into, one, wave faced the forests
and opened fire, cutting off the attacking native wave while the other flank, faced
the rear of the natives who had come to attack Polonus from the rear, thus the
rear attackers now had guns pointed at them from the rear,it was an effective
flush and Polonus cut down over three thousand native warriors in his rears of
the jungles whilst the ones in the bushes rear of polonus beat a hasty retreat
from the rapid gunfire,it was a fierce battle and Ochiagha Okike knew that all
he needed was just one chance and he would flog the foreigners even into the
seas but Polonus too was thinking in the same line of thoughts. However Ojiofor
was being beaten beyond belief,he had retreated unto Umule and in just close to
forty eight hours,Pappilon was in Umule and preparing for another wave of
attack,Ojiofor was yet to even kill one greek, however, two days later, the greeks
had almost entered umuezumezu, and in Umuoleke and Okpuala, they began to hear
for the first time and the earth shook with sounds, boom!,boom!! Boom!!!,that
same day,the re-enforcements moved from Okpuala and marched for a day and
arrived Umule, they were led by Osota Onye isi nche Adindu of Umuezumezu and
osota Isi nche Obioma of Okpuala, they arrived Umuezumezu just as Ojiofor was
about retreat Umuoleke, they gave him the plans,he was relieved, his numbers had
reduced greatly, they did the wide split as Smith had suggested,Ojiofor had told
them about the resting habits of the visitors but even then their canons were
armed the natives were scared of that thing, but as they listened to the
messenger, they knew that it was the only way out, lives would be lost but
already many lives had already had been lost so they may as well try it
out, soon the loud booms ceased, signalling that the General was resting for an
hour or two, that was all the time the natives needed, they cut into three waves
from three different points and attacked,Pappilon was more than surprised,he
did not know what to make of it but he launched a counter attack at once, but he
knew that if the native broke through the canon wall,he wuld have to retreat
and retreat he did ,for in an hour, the natives were upon
him, cutting, slashing, biting and lynching everyone and everything in sight,it
was a gory sight, nothing was left out, even their teeth was in use no doubt as
at then and Pappilon stood his ground and he and his men fired till there was no
more space to reload, and it became a face to face sword and matchet battle, the
specialty of the natives, the fierce fight lasted for six hours and
later, pappilon and his men managed to reload their canons and began to fire
randomly, surprising the natives who were already having the upper hand in the
matchet and sword combat and with that opening,Pappilon, concentrated his canons
in front chase back his enemies and used the opening In his rear,it was like a
prophesy, they began to retreat and the natives helped in sending them paking
with arrows,Pappilon had been so close,he could not believe it but the natives
had shown a very professional knowledge of canon wall breaking, how? He did not
know but something was wrong,Pappilon’s retreat was final,he knew that there
was going to be no second chances but he decided to stop at the first river
shore town and cross-check his figures but he was badly injured, his team was
shredded and torn apart,he had lost more than twenty thousand men in one blow
and over five thousand wounded,if he did get to the shore town,he would signal
the Galleons to prepare to set sail, this place was evil.
Back at
Okpuala, the news of Ojiofors victory was a good heartlifting to the
people, there were lou cheers,Amobi and young trainee warriors like him were
used as messengers to take food and water to the frons in big bull wagos, they
worked for three days and nights, ddepositing foods and waters at marked
spots, soon,Pappilon reached Ala-imo and was attacked by a residue of warriors
who had returned from the egbelubi fronts and it was a real fight, the ships
gun’s could not help as it would also kill Pappilon too,but the Natives
,decided to hit at the ships with big boats from ala-imo,they took out all the
boats that they could get and as the sailors repeled them with guns, they too
kept the sailors busy with bows and arrows and two hours later, over a hundred
boats filled with natives (many dying and falling into the water) boarded the
galleons and they caused a lot of havoc,Pappilon was sank, his entire fleet was
set ablaze and estroyed in one day,an entire battalion consisting of Ojiofor’s
remaining units, the re-enforcements and the egbelubi team,it was a one sided
fight, with over five hundred thousand natives, they crushed Pappilon in one blow
and it was fatal, within three days,Ala-imo was back in the control of the
native warriors, they had lost close to fifty thousand men in that last blow, but
the end had justified the means, and afterwards,Ojiofor Put one hundred thousand
warriors at Alaimo and pushed on to Ochanja with the remaining men which were
over two hundred thousand, they arrived in four days just as Ochiagha Okike was
about to launch another fruitless attack at Polonus,Okike was delighted to see
Ojiofor and his warriors,he had lost so many thousands of warriors to Polonus
and his numbers had been greatly reduced,Ojiofors arrival boosted his morale
greatly and when he learnt that Pappilon was done for,he sang with joy, they
gave him the programm that had beaten pappilon and they decided to try it by
the next day’s morning.
At
the Okpuala fort,Pappilons defeat was great news to all, after the great tremors
the pink thief had caused with his canons, the natives relaxed a bit,the young
messenger warriors still continued their routine food dumpings in the
forests,Smith was overjoyed and Alexander was a bit confused,he knew that he
could never leave this lands alive again but he somewhat understood what Smith
had done and he almost wept when he heard that Pappilon was down, but all hope
was not lost,Polonus might succeed where Pappilon had failed, Ogun and some
Oroba youths who had fled their lands, convened with The Ndi eze’s and insisted
On going to join the warriors at the warfront,if for nothing, then at least to
restore their dignity as men and assist the warriors in Reclaiming their
lands, they numbered up to fifty five thousand oroba battle ready men,all they
needed was Matchets, the Eze’s gave them what they need and also assigned a team
of one thousand men to lead them to Ochanja!
The next
morning by dawn,Ocjiagha Okike sent a message to Ochiagha Ibeneme?THEY Decided
to attack within the hour, however,it was as if Polonus was anticipating their
move, the Natives divided themselves into six units on three sides and launched
an attack and as soon as the first wave threew themselves at the pink
soldiers,Polonus and his men opened fire with guns, they fired randomly and
killed a lot of men but on the rush of the second wave, they opened up with
canons, this did not deter the natives, however, many died trying to break through
the canon wall,Polonus was suicidal about his fight,he fought very vehemently
and later fell back by evening time and by dawn next day,the Roman general and
his army Crossed the Ochanja river and back to Ebele, they were pursued by the
very angry natives and at Ore,they ran into Ochiagha Oforma, who happily hit at
them,Polonus had been surprised, because he had had to abandon, canons and all
and they were fleeing on horse back,at Ore it was that General Argonus Polonus
was cut down by Oforma and Okike and together they continued chasing the little
bands scattered here and there in Oroba Villages, they combed
everywhere, infact, they hunted down pink men and traitors and wiped out every
traces of the intruders, they went as far as Ile Remo and Eko and pursued the
Last ones unto Eti-Osa and into the seas, the pursuit lasted eighteen days and
nights and they captured about a thousand pink skinned Thives and marched
gloriously back to Ochanja, they met Ogun and his men at Ochanja, brimming for a
fight, thus at Ochanja, the Unbelieveable happened, the Ochiagha was talking to
another Ochiagha when a pink skinned prisoner cut the ropes on his wrists and
fastly pulled the dagger from the sieds of a nearby warrior and stuck it into
the back of Ochiagha Okike with all his might, the dagger tip came out in
front, piercing the warlords heart, the great Warlord clutched at his heart and
some minutes later, surprise in his eyes,he gently fell down dead,Hey,the
Ezumezu warriors went berserk, the warriors from other clans shifted back as
their ezumezu brothers wept, they unsheated their matchets and fell on the
prisoners, slaughtering everyone of them like rams, they massacred the remaining
Romans and in less than hour, they had wiped out the prisoners, still not
satiated, they lifted the corpse of their warlord and mounted their horses that
very day and rode furiously away homewards,it was a furious journey that lasted
five days and as the warriors rode into Ezumezu town,5 the news of victory had
already the townspeople retur back to their homes, they were already beginning
to repair and rebuild their town, and as the warriors rode into town and rode
straight to Eze Nwude’s ovu,it was obvious that something was wrong, the Nze’s
was seated with Eze nwude when the warriors marched in and deposited the corpse
of their late warlord before the onye Eze, and the story of his death was told
in tears, there was silence, that hour, the Onye Eze,sent Alajemba to go and make
sure that nothing happened to Smith and Alexander
As
Enyidia who was heavily pregnant and close to delivery was seated listening to
her husbands servants tell stories while they peeled yams for cooking,’she had
heard that the warriors had returned) she heard horse hooves and smiled and
gently got up and walked out to meet her husband suddenly she stopped, outside
their house was an entourage of about three thousand warriors on horse
back, they made way for two men bearing a bedding, the men solemnly walked into
the compound and deposited the corpse in front of Enyidiya who saw her husband
in a state that she had never ever tought that she’d see him in,he seemed so
invinsible, she knelt down and wailed loudly like a woman in great child birth
pains and the soldiers made way as a horse rider rode up to her in the compound
and called her name,Enyidiya! In tears, she looked up and into the eyes of Eze
Nwude,It shall be well with you now and forever as long as I live! Said the
Onye Eze and turned his horse and rode away, followed by his entourage,Onye
isi-Nche Nwokoike stayed behind all night to pacify her and by midnight in
which she was still wailing uncontrollably, she began to have labour pains and
Nze Okoro’s wife was called and other women and by dawn, she gave birth to her
second child,a daughter she named,Nwabiaranuju.
Ochiagha
Okike was buried one week after the return of the warriors, nwude made sure that
all protocols were adhered to.
That
same day in a hospital in Danjoro in Alule was in great Labour and after an
hour the nurse ran out and shouted,Kal saboa,Kal Saboa, come, she has delivered!
Said the nurse and the man rushed into the maternity room and saw his companion
now tiredly smiling and she handed him the tiny infant and said,it’s a boy,Kal
Duran Saboa was all smiles,he loved children and his companion Lih Verana
Thrange had promised that the infant would be surnamed after him,as he held the
child, the nurse came back inside and said, kal, please bring the infant,we have
to sign at the registry down at the hall now and also have his weights there
,she said and as they were about to leave, lih Verana spoke, saying,Duran,His
name shall be Djivine, for he is a warrior and will remain a warrior, said the
lady and the man walked out to the hall and as he got to the registerer,he took
his pen and wrote the infants name, Djivine
Saboa!
